I'm glad someone called out that he is a race car driver... I was about to say... can I do that too?

You can at least try... not in a public road of course and not in such a narrow road, next to trees, etc... but why not to try it in safe conditions?

The 1M is all about learning how to drive it, explore its capabilities and have fun in the process. You don't need to go to that extreme, of course.

Otherwise, why would you want to buy an 1M... for 'showing-off'?!

Here a little drift on the dry for a driving test about the 1M. It was a VO this time.

Yeah i have used the sport button. I have the idea that with sport on, the turbo s react a little bit faster. That s what you need in a drift. The fastest throttle input as possible. That gives more control.
Incredible driving!

Hi Advevo,

In the first drift of this vid did you use the handbrake to initiate the drift?

No was purely on power.

I know why you think it was handbrake.

The back end steps away very hard. Thats because of the wide tires in combination with 0 to 100% locking diff. You get short inside wheel spin then the diff locks the back steps away hard. On the dry you need to react very very fast to catch it. This was a very hard drift to do. It looks easy on camera but it wasn t.

It's not just that... I can see the brake lights ON immediately after the quick direction change and acceleration. Why is that? Did you use LFB to 'catch' the back end?

PS: Can you please answer also to my earlier questions? I'm sorry for so many questions but I'm really committed to learn more about drifiting in general and with the 1M in particular.

If you are really committed then go to drift school and do a course rather than try it on public roads, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

3rd gear in the longdrift movie and second gear in VO drift.

Are you saying that it's easier to drift and control it on the wet than in the dry even when you have so much low-end torque?

Aren't things less predictable on the wet? YES

When wet it s easier to spin out because of the slippery surface. But on wet tarmac you have a little more time to correct the slide. On the dry you got less time to catch the slide. The car wants to grip and grip so it s lets go very heavily so that s very hard to do also.

Are you saying that when you go a little wide by virtue of LFB you then ease off the brake pedal in order to get the nose closer to the inside of the corner?

Yes you can bring back the car to the inside of a corner with LFB. When the drift is to highspeed then leftfoot braking can help you.

Isn't it the other way around?
no

I did brake a little bit otherwise the speed was to high for the next corner.

OK! So, you actually brake with LFB to bring back the car to the inside of the corner, you don't ease off the brake pedal which is the opposite action of that needed, right?! That's what I was trying to clarify because you said:

Yes. In the wet it's a lot easier to slide at lower speeds and because the speeds are lower you have more time to react then it's safer that way. I can understand that. But, at the same time it's very easy 'to over do it' because of the slippery conditions, mainly, when you have such an high low-end torque engine as the one in the 1M.

That's the reason why all the 1M reviewers are saying 'don't turn-off the DSC in the wet, unless you are crazy enough or you know what you are doing'.

I guess I'm crazy enough to want to know what I'm doing... thank you for your help, Andre!

Andre,

Do you find the 1M more demanding to drift than the other cars you are used to?

How would you rank the following cars as far as drifting capabilities:

a) E46 M3;

b) E46 M3 CSL

c) 1M

d) 997 MK2 GT3

e) 130i + LSD

f) Mitsubishi EVO VII

g) Mitsubishi EVO VIII

h) Subaru STI 8

Can t tell.

2wd and 4wd. It s a different approch.

Drexler 40% lock lsd is easier to drift then a BMW 0 to 100% lock diff.

it all depends.

after some, uh, testing, I can confirm left foot braking in this manner is quite effective

You are about to take two major steps in the path to happiness...

1) Ditch the heavy E92 M3 for the lighter and nimble 1M;

2) Having private drifting lessons with Andre;

then for complete happiness you will need just another small step:

3) Find the right woman (if you didn't already).

As Colin Chapman (founder of Lotus) put it:

"Adding power makes you faster on the straights, while subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere. "

"Simplicate, then add lightness."

Life isn't so complicated afterall...
