That's really cool technology. I see you've added rear trunk scan as well.
Can you go back and add detail to previous scans? Or is it a one shot deal? The scan someone did of the m3 is amazing. https://sketchfab.com/models/981462d...c3d8d993a3f959 |

The exterior scans look like they come out very well. The real reason I would like to get the exterior scan is because it would really help me to model the car geometrically in solidworks. I'm trying to do that now in solidworks, but only with rough measurements. If I can solid model it, then I can do things like aero simulation to find out what aero parts are most effective. The M3 model you linked to was actually just hand modeled. Look at the attached photo and see that the mesh is absolutely and completely symmetric...no actual 3D scan would be that way without a huge amount of work. As for scanning the whole car...I have nice scanners, but nice scanners also equate to "takes longer than a cheapy scanner" so scanning a whole car would take some time (half a day probably). If you go here: http://www.123dapp.com/catch/Wife-s-...t-scan/3617304 ...this 3D scan was done using a cell phone camera that you have right now....the 123D Catch service allows you to (for free) take 30-60 pictures os something from all different angles, and the unicorn-magic of software and mathematics sends you back a 3D model. It is not terribly accurate, but better than nothing! |

Awesome stuff. Would you be scanning the inside of the boot?
I'd love to be able to get the boot dimensions 100% accurate for some plans I've got with mine, I just don't fancy climbing around with a tape measure lol!

...but really, though....I have two scanners...one that is fast and one that is slower (but 3x the resolution). The faster one needs about 24" in order to see the surface. The trunk does not have that clearance in all areas. So, I would have to switch to the hi-res one that is also slower, since this only needs about 6" of clearance.....it would take a while to be sure, but it could be done. You also would not be able to use the photo-based technique above, since that works by having an object in the center and you circle around it (instead of the camera in the center). You might might might be able to do multiple photo-based activities, and stitch them together later on, but that would also be work. |

Gentlemen I have certainly solved my problem and maybe yours too. I present an accurate model, true to scale, with factory panels. I'm probably the only person that cares about a solid model for simulation testing, but this model can be used for getting exterior (and interior is also in there, also beautiful) dimensions that should be pretty darn accurate. Good enough for 3D printing aero parts for sure.
I have to go to bed now, but I'll upload the non-solid model tomorrow. This model will be useful for making sure my solid model is accurate. Last edited by blank; 06-12-2015 at 02:33 AM.. |

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. Are there iOS apps that can open these files to play around with? I see that the file sizes themselves aren't that big.
Your interior rendering is pretty cool too. |

By the way...is that model something that could be listed for all to see/download, or are the rights reserved to the original content creator? |

would it be possible to take the scan of the radio/climate control and manipulate it with computer programs to move the climate controls down to where the seat warmer buttons are and delete the radio and make a hole for a 8" tablet where the radio is now? and then print the whole piece of trim? I can't do it but maybe someone else can if I paid them?

...and in response to the CF "side splitters"...I don't really know what those are, but if the part in question is of any length, then 3D printing would be a problem printing something that long. But, making a mold that could used to make something in fiberglass or CF is doable, if you are willing to piece something together. |

Thanks to a very nice member of this forum, I received the cup holder, cup holder cover, and cup holder bracket and scanned them. Everyone can look and download and enjoy!
Cup holder: https://skfb.ly/ESHM Cup holder cover: https://skfb.ly/ESHL Cup holder bracket: https://skfb.ly/ESHN The only part that did not come out perfectly was the bracket because the inside is hard for the scanner to reach...but it is mostly there, and some work in Meshmixer could fix it right up. Let me know what you all think! |

Wow those are really detailed, and look great!
Now what to make with them. 1) new cup holders 2) phone cradle (could be wired in with charger and integrated into car audio) 3) gun holster (no joke, there is a thread on this - some places are very dangerous to live in) 4) gopro/dash-cam mount - some places are dangerous to be pulled over by police. Ha - this just got political! Okay clearly I ran out of ideas quickly, but these are really cool. Thanks Pendragn. |

You're welcome! The phone holder would not be that hard to model and then 3D print.....or get a Steelie and a soft phone case like I have, and just make a pedestal for it, and it is way better than mounting it up on the dash or trim like I have it now.
But yes, many things could be put on there.... |

That's amazing how detailed the 3D scans are. Thanks for all the time and effort spent, hopefully now we will have some other options for that location.
