Need new shoes - Aspect Ratio

Time to start thinking about new shoes!

I have read through many of the 1M tire threads and it has proven to be very useful. I did however have 1 question as it relates to the aspect ratio. Why would you choose a 255/35/19 over a 265/30/19 in front. It was my impression that you should try to fit the largest tires possible. I continually read people running into rubbing issues on 265/35/19 and automatically went to 255’s with only a couple comments of the 265/30. My point being, if it’s best to have the widest possible, why is the 265/30 not more highly recommended?

My current thought is to go 265/30/19 and either 285 or 295/30/19 out back. Keep in mind, I’m very new so mild characteristics presented by different tires likely won’t be very noticeable to me yet. Love the wide tire look, especially on the 1M, so if maximizing this aesthetically also makes sense performance wise, I don’t mind spending the little bit extra even if I won’t really be able to take advantage of it.

Garage List
While the title may not seem it, there is a lot of info you'll find useful in this recent thread.
PS4S vs CUP 2's + Tire Size Question
https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1475309

My summary would be with a car like ours you need to fully understand the trade offs. The tires may look better, and may in many situations stick better, but the downside would likely be the predictability and controllability of when the rear end breaks looks will probably be more difficult to control. You mention you're a beginner, so I worry about this. If you never turn off the traction control you should be OK, but if you find yourself being aggressive with the car you'll need to be careful.

I myself am not an expert, but I've carefully read the info exchanged here over the last 1 year plus by people like nachob and other senpais. Keep reading, and wait for them to chime in here.

Thanks JP

I did read through that thread which also helped me decide on mp4s over R spec or the cup 2’s. I just didn’t see anything about the difference in tire width/aspect ratios. From other threads I read, it seems the smaller diameter sharpens some of the inputs while being less absorbent of road imperfections. Maybe those sharper inputs is the reason they aren’t recommended, especially for a beginner? Appreciate the input and look forward to other replies!

Width can give you more traction in a straight line but if you go too wide, the rim will not support the tire as well and it can make handling mushier. You are also increasing the rolling radius and weight which can dampen performance. Some people notice that it gets harder to to spin the wheels with the bigger aspect ratio/wider tires. Some of it is additional contact patch, but some is also a bit more weight and the taller tire changes the moment. Moment as in fulcrum. It is harder to turn a taller tire because like going farther out on a lever gives you more lifting force the opposite happens with a taller tire. It has more leverage against the drivetrain.

Now the 1M spins up really fast, almost too fast sometimes and it has plenty of torque so it's not as critical as an underpowered or high revving NA car.

Personally, I prefer to stay within the stock rolling diameter and doing it right. If you want to go wider, get a wider rim and go something like 295/30/19 in rear so that you maintain close to stock rolling diameter.

If you want to keep stock wheels, I would probably keep the stock sizes. While the 1M did not get as much development time as other M cars, it is universally loved for how naughty and fun it feels. So leave it close to stock and just get the best tires you can get.

I hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks Nachob, it does. Seems like until I look at aftermarket wheels, the already slightly more aggressive 255/35/19 275/35/19 is plenty. trying to work a 265/30/19 285-295/30/19 on stock wheels either may not fit or will negatively impact the driving characteristics.

Ended up with the MP4S 255/35/19 and 275/35/19.

Perhaps more importantly, got an alignment done. Looking forward to this new setup

How's the ride with the new shoes and new size?
What is the difference compared to stock?

Thanks!

I honestly think the alignment had the biggest impact. I am not sure I am skilled enough to feel the impact of slightly bigger tires and the PS4S felt about on par with the PSS. The more street oriented tires certainly have some limitations on the track, but as a dual purpose tire, these are hard to beat.
