Not sold on this J pipe idea, but would be good to hear how you find it. BTW, you're obviously not happy with the PE ? |

I'll be having a look tonight to see if I have that rubber piece. love the exhaust but if it was just a bit quieter in that 2000 - 3000 rpm range it would be perfect. I use my car for business and I'm 50 Y.O so while I still enjoy my toys, I also need to be a bit practical too. I'm using a performance exhaust shop that does a lot of work on Euro cars and the owner himself is a Euro enthusiast. He assures me this "J" pipe will solve "MY" problem. At $100 ... its worth a try I say.

Fair point. Any chance of getting a before/after vid/sound clip?

Just looked under my car and I don't have that rubber piece. It's also not on the stock unit..... Anyway ... Done more research on that J pipe and I've got my fingers crossed this will solve the drone.

Update on "J" pipe. I can confirm it has removed the drone completely. Hasn't taken anything away from the exhaust note but the drone between 2000 and 3000 rpm is gone. With all the windows and sunroof closed, you still hear the exhaust rumble but you can tell its outside and not resenating in the cabin. Best of both worlds now. I didn't take any photos while it was being done unfortunately but if anyone is interested I might update with pic on the weekend. I can at least show where they tapped it in to the exhaust.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so very much for this thread. I had a PE installed on my 2010 128i in February of this year (2016). Even though I have been enjoying the overall sound of the exhaust, I thought the apparent drone inside the cabin was something I just had to accept as my new reality. After discovering this thread, I crawled under my car in the middle of the night and noticed my PE was missing the rubber piece. I unpacked the original exhaust, and voila! I immediately installed it on the performance exhaust and took "Olivia" out for a drive. WOW! So much better - especially while cruising between 2000 - 3000 rpm. I am so psyched. Perhaps now I will love the PE as much as everybody else.

I got that part about a month ago and installed it, I torqued it down to 22-27nm (can not recall exactly) and it came with the required bolt and had thread-locker pre-treated.
On stock exhaust system it removed virtually all the drone in the car, as well as outside drone. |

Damper: 18303413587
Bolt: 18407540023 I noticed that the exhaust flap inside my muffler is broke, so it is always open. Someone said to me that my 125i sounded louder than normal, we checked the vacuum actuator and the hose, all is connected. When i lifted the car i tapped on the muffler and it made that typical sound that something is loose inside. A performance exhaust is needed nice excuse i guess but last on my list. |
