SMG coming soon

So, I was trying to figure out some maintenance stuff for the E90 and was looking through the car's manual and if you look in the index you'll see there's a reference for SMG. Why wouldnt BMW have a section about SMG in a car's manual that doesn't offer it? That's a good question, I think it's safe to assume there will be an E90 with SMG quite soon, that isn't an M car. If you want to see for yourself, turn to page 55 of the owner's manual.

Im about 80% positive that they cancelled the SMG option for the E90. I saw some BMW official documentation at least 7 weeks back.

It was cancelled for the existing models, but what about the potential 335i? Mind you this manual is made ONLY for the 3-Series.

Just from what i've noticed, companies make little slip ups here and there, for example:

If any of you looked at the iPod website for car integration, ipod site, you'll notice that they iPod displayed is the nano. This picture has been running on Apple's website for about 2-months, a little while before the nano was even released. Just a thought.

I am pretty sure BMW NA dropped the SMG, NOT BMW AG, meaning other markets still can get it, just not us!

SMG is not coming anywhere for the E90. It was fully developed even before the introduction of the E90 and parts are in some versions of the ETK (parts catalogue),but it´s been cancelled for good. Since officially it was only mentioned in the US internal dealer brochures for Sept., there onbly is a document that reports the E90 will not become available with SMG in it´s lifetime. Since it was never officially announced anywhere else, there also is not cancellation notice. SMG will not be available on the non-M E90 in any market.

Rumours have it, SMG was cancelled because BMW and ZF (the gearbox manufacturer) are working on a system similar to the Audi/VW DSG box. A double clutch system called ZSG. That might be first introduced with the 335.

The reference in the manual is just an oversight such as the entries for SMG related parts in the ETK. Those things have relatively long advance times and could have been printed before the decision to ditch the SMG was made.

I read that too somewhere (not sure where) that a the 335 will first come out as the 335Ci :P

That could be awesome - if it looks anything like that lastest spy pic with an over 230kw engine... *droooool*

Double Clutching is the way to go. I read that AMG is also going to this direction to replace its AMG Speedshift. The M3 SMG II jerkings are hell, why pay more for something aged and not working properly?

can someone explain to me the difference between dsg in audi cars and smg in bmw? i have personally never driven any of these 2 systems but from my research with smg, u need to paddle shift up and down to select gear, do u still have to feather the clutch in by balancing gas and paddle shift since there is no clutch present for u to step on? how is dsg much better than smg? isn't smoother or doesn't require feathering in the paddle shift? thanks

SMG is a normal manual gearbox with a electrically controlled hydraulic gearchange and clutch control unit.

You have no way of manually putting in the clutch, the system controlls everything.
You change gears using the padels on the steering wheel or pussing forward or back on the stick on the centre consol.

DSG/ZSG works the same way with paddels and no clutch pedal, but have 2 clutches and a special gearbox.
If you are in 1st gear, one clutch is closed on 1st gear and the other clutch would be open and already have 2nd selected and will instantly close as the other clutch opens when you shift up.
The 1st clutch will then solong get 3rd ready
It can very quickly switch back to a lower gear aswell if needed.

DSG is faster than SMG due to the next gear already been selected on the other clutch.

But the VW/Audi DSG system has some drawbacks which BMW hopefually will fix with their ZSG.
