It's the strut spacer that Fe1rx designed. This is the only decent picture I have of it installed.

No, it is a slip fit.

goodjob

cool guy!
I was looking for the Camber/Caster Plates solution of ohlins 1m (E82) and saw your article.
I think you have calculated very carefully.
I have a lot of technical questions and I want to ask you.
if you have a facebook messenger or email?

From what I understand the 1M has very different camber plates and front struts. I don't have any experience with what is required on that setup.

Question

Understand! Anyway, thanks!
But I would like to ask you some more information:

About choosing "swift sping":
Front Swift springs:
part No. : Z65-178-070 ???

camber plate

The 3DM camber plate you are using.
Do you choose PERCH SIZE : 2.5"(65MM)?

Compared with the original "ohlins spring" and the modified "swift spring", the "swift spring" will make the car drive better? Or will it become "harder"?

Yeah, 65mm perch. In the swift part number:
- Z65 is the spring diameter in mm
- 178 is the length in mm
- 070 is the rate in kgf/mm

Swift springs are advertised as having less coils for the same height and rate as other springs. So compared to a spring with more coils, the swift spring will have more usable stroke before coil bind. Theoretically, if you replaced the ohlins springs with swifts and kept the rate and length the same the swifts would ride better. When you increase the spring rate it will get harder.

I chose the swift springs because I wanted the most usable stroke from the spring.

If anyone is interested, here's a new Apex 17x9 ET52 wheel with a 12mm spacer. 2.5mm of clearance between the wheel and strut.

A 255 on a 9" wheel is usually pretty flush with the lip, so I suspect the tire will have sufficient clearance. The tire may rub lightly on the shock body under load on occasion, but that's not a big deal. I've run ~1mm of tire clearance to my perch on my M3 for a year now with no issues.

Okay, my 255 RT660s got here the other day, I had a couple mounted to start checking clearances and figuring out the fitment.

So the lip of the tire sticks out 3mm past the lip of the wheel. But it isn't right next to the wheel lip, so you do get a little more clearance due to the angle of the strut.

I did not swap springs yet, wanted to see what it would take to fit the wheels as-is. I have a bunch of spacers so, for fitment check only, I stacked spacers to check clearances.

With 17mm of spacer, the tire clears the spring perch by less than 1mm. Tire clears the strut body by 6mm according to the stack of feeler gauge I was able to fit in there.

Outside of the tire is very flush with the fender. I did not drive the car, just lowered it to the ground and rolled back and forth to settle the suspension.

My plan is to go to a 6" spring and run a 15mm spacer.

The rear fit with no issue.

I am installing my ohlin kit from 3DM and I am trying to figure out the rear preload using swift springs. Did you have to adjust your ride height to add preload?

Do you mean preload so that the rear spring doesn't fall out at full droop?

I have 8" rear springs and at my ride height they are secure. So yes, I was able to get to my target ride height and have the rear spring preloaded enough that it doesn't fall out.

Wonder if my suspension bushings are a little worn. Set the recommendation 45mm ride height and I can move the spring around (ie no load).

I think this is what lowside67 did. BUT these factors need to be considered:
- 500# spring
- he had 17x9+42 wheels
- re71r tires
- different camber - I think he ended up at -3.5 with offset bushings and oem control arms (vs 1m control arms — anyone know if 1m control arms are legal in STX ?)
- doesn't look like they had the top plate stacks when he did his ohlins setup a few years ago

Doesn't the 15mm spacer push the wheel past the outer edge of the fender ?

Camber plates and 1M arms together are not legal for STX, you can run one or the other.

Swapped springs and ran the new tires at VIR and autox the past two weekends, car performed better than ever.

My plan for next season was 255 RT660s, so I'm happy to hear they fit and you liked the performance. Do you have an A/B comparison of lap times at VIR with Rivals versus RT660? Bonus points if you have a lap with RE71R to compare as well.

I've only run RE71Rs on this car, RT660 is my second track tire since I've owned it. No A/B comparison, I've made too many setup changes to attribute anything to a single part.

How did you like the RT660s as compared to the RE71R?

My RE71Rs were certainly heat cycled out and quite worn, I'd gotten them new in spring 2019, hardly used them last year, and then used them up at several events this year. I had them flipped once a little past halfway through their life.

Remembering back to when they were new, I'd say the noise/comfort level driving to events is slightly in the RT660s favor.

The most apparent difference is the RT660 has much softer sidewalls, so much so that there is noticeable squirm when driving in a straight line and it feels like the tire wants to wander, takes a bit longer for the tire to take a set in a corner. Once I was used to that I adapted quickly and was able to push them hard.

They offer good audible feedback when getting to the limit. Mine wore nicely after the track day. I was warned that they might feather along the center rib but mine didn't do that at all.

Starting them at similar cold pressures that I ran the bridge stones at seemed to keep them happy.
