1M Recognition

I just went to a local BMW club meeting and of the 50 or so people, 1 person knew what the 1M was. My favorite line was "Oh a 1M, i love those M3's!" The 1M is so understated that claimed BMW enthusiasts dont even know what it is! I guess this is a huge appeal to me for the car too.

LOL! The M1 comment is the worst! My neighbor has a Porsche GT4 and we were talking and I explained I had a 1M. The next day he was asking me what I did for a living, and other odd questions...then followed up with "i really cant wait to see your M1!"

Maybe it depends where you live, my experience has been the exact opposite. “True car people” kind of freak out when they see my car. The general public has no idea.

When I took my car to a local shop that specializes in Porsche, they had an R8 and Ferrari at the shop and you would have thought my car was on that level with the amount of attention, all the employees came out and looked at the car and wanted to hear about how it drives.

Same thing when I stopped by the BMW dealer, they all wanted to see the car, like it was some type of special car.

I get nods/waves from car guys, I have had someone follow me until I park and ask if they can take a picture, etc...

Going to 4 driving schools this past summer, the instructors were all aware of my car and knew it was rare, asked me questions, etc...

I will say my car has the black competition wheels, the OEM CF spoiler and mirror caps, tint, CF exhaust tips, Euro black accents on the lights, so it looks somewhat aggressive in person, but not much more than others.

I have been surprised how much respect the car gets, TBH.

Generally speaking few if any know the car in my region. Some rare exceptions. Recently I ran into a guy who did know the car but he also drivers a 2002 so I think that says a lot.

One thing I love is the 1M is not special to everyone, but the people who know and understand it.

I like this sentiment. It's special to me because of it's history. After the E90s came out and the cars were bigger, heavier than the e46s, I was very vocal on here about my dissapointment. I waited for the 1 series with excitement only to have it dashed by BMW USA not offering us the cloth/alcantara interiors, the steering really not being that good, etc. I took a lot of heat on this site for wanting something lighter, smaller more focused that we could buy new with warranty and do Euro delivery. Then what do you know. Someone at BMW cared also and they made this little gem happen. I understand the story and the effort so many made to make this car happen. Guys at BMW gambled their reputations on it. BMW had horrible lease rates because they thought it would not sell and depreciate rapidly. The economy was bad and barely recovering from the recession. But at the time BMW was garbage to guys like me and then they came. I remember the mobs of onlookers throughout Europe when I was on ED. My car was making a strange sound somewhere in Austria and I saw a small BMW dealer. I pulled in and people from the service bay and from inside the dealer all came to look at it. It might as well been a Bugatti Veyron. My the biggest compliment came from the young man that walked me down the stairs at BMW Welt to pick up my 1M. I had seen him the day before delivery high end M3s and super expensive cars. Now as I opened the door....he says excitedly, THIS IS THE ONE I WOULD GET! I looked at him and said, is that part of the script? You tell that to all new owners? No, with his impeccable English with slight German accent. No, really this is the one I would get above all others. I remember coming out of a gas station in Italy and my car was surrounded by Italians peering in the windows and a Z4 flying on the autobahn about 150 and hitting the brakes as they were about to pass and pulling in front of me to take pictures.

The car is 8 years old now and most don't know that it was a watershed for BMW that brought back "creds" for old school fan-boys. Yet yesterday I saw a beautiful manual M2C at Cars and Coffee San Clemente. I saw the guy get out with his boy from this beautiful machine and walk away. As I was walking by my old nicked up 1M, I see him walk around the the 1M looking at it intently and pulling out his phone and taking pictures of it. For all I know, he could be posting something like hey look at this old dated looking overrated 1M? But it looked like he was excited to see it and I was actually surprised. He was the latest, hottest BMW on the market, yet still got excited to see the old, slow 1M.

So there are a few out there that understand this car and it's nice. As M3Gator mentioned, it's an old car now and I am frankly surprised that anyone out there does still care. And while not as common as in 2011, it means more now when someone does know that this little orange thing was something special back in the day.

people love the 1M in NYC. always someone taking photos wherever i'm driving.....probably tourists posting "just saw this 1M in NYC!" lol. I've had numerous offers to buy the car from me sitting in traffic, many people wanting to talk to me about it......am used to it now and really like letting people see the car.

Half of 1M owners keep their cars hidden away in garages all year; so i'm happy to put mine on display regularly for millions of people in one of the biggest cities. It's priceless to make strangers smile. BMW owners are some of the excited to see the 1M......

What surprises me the most is how many YOUNGER people are in love with it. Kids between the ages of 8 and 18 (estimating). have had so many kids yell "1M!!!" over the years. Children of the internet.....they are ensuring these cars will be worth A LOT in 20 years when they have money to buy one. My guess is that it's the orange paint, big wheels, and fat fenders that captured their imagination.

Hey etr2016 I see you are based in Scottsdale AZ. Was this a BMW CCA (Roadrunner Chapter) meeting? I am also based in Scottsdale, and find very few people recognize my VO 1M, even when I park it in front of BMW North Scottsdale, not a peep from anyone. This is a little unfortunate, it is fun when you run into someone that appreciates the 1M. However does not change the fact that I have a blast every time I drive the car!

It was the "BMW Social Club" - some other club I found on Facebook. There were 50 people that showed up to this tiny restaurant in scottsdale! I was shocked considering it was the same morning as Cars and Coffee.

Not sure if that link works....

Its funny... but I totally agree with everyone here. My experience shows that no one really knows what a 1M is. And even more funny is how people try to tell me they do. Their stats are all over the place. If i am being honest, that kinda bothers me as much as it makes me feel good. weird right? let me explain...

I like that the 1M is so special that I know it and its a exclusive club. BUT I do like it when others show my car respect because they also see it as a special car. I guess I view my car as a bit of a celebrity... for sure not an A lister but I mean, cmon people... come take selfies with her because she is an up and coming rockstar!

Had to add some recent pics too

I've had similar experience in regards to NO one noticing, understanding or comprehend my 1M.

Except for my neighbor who has an R8!

Aside from that, in my short 5 month ownership, no one else has even given it a second look....no biggie!

But, like I said in an earlier post! We are a Top Secret organization 🤣

Same experience here. No one really knows what it is. Their first question is always how many hp does it have. And then are disappointed when I tell them how much. They all assume it would've been around 400.

The best is when my wife and I went to the dealership to look at the new X5 and the salesman asked what I drive, and i pointed and go the 1M over there. I said you probably don't get many of those come through here I bet. He said nah, we get a few, to my surprise.. Later on when he had his manager come over to talk to us, he told his manager we drive a "1 series". That's when I knew he had no clue haha.

It's all good though, I like knowing that I have a car that only those who need to know actually know about it.

I think the HP figure is quoted off the regular torque figure (HP is a function of torque and RPM), not the overboost. Anyone know what the peak HP is with overboost?

No one really knows what it is. Doesn't bother me and I don't bother correcting them when they refer to it as a M1 or even M2.

And that mostly happens all from 2750rpm to 4500rpm. It's more complex than that since there are tables in the DME that define how much pressure is decayed after targets hit. The quoted figures are complete as is.

blackmist222777 That's an awesome front lip, which is it? I like the full coverage ones.

It's funny. I drove a 911, then a Cayman, and now a 135i, and I get people asking me about the BMW much more than the Porsches. I think part of it is more people think Porsche drivers are a-holes, so they don't bother bringing it up. I used to randomly get flipped off in my Porsche, and that was just in casual driving, not because I was driving crazy or anything.

Its a Slek front lip. Its great... and i opted for the 1x1 weave which i think looks better. however, bear in mind that its just held on with tape and rear bolts. i already had one fall off on the free way so this one has added bolt points in the front for better support. now its on there SOLID!

Garage List
Last night my core Tokyo car friend group (1M, Cayman S, vintage Skyline, 911) met up at Tatsumi PA for our first gathering of 2019. In addition to the core we had two new additions: 308 GTB and Cayman GT4. With that collection of cars hardly anyone paid any attention to my 1M, and no one asked any questions or approached me with any comments. I must say that the weather was freezing cold so there were far fewer car owners and car gawkers than usual. Normally I'll get 2 to 3 knowledgeable gapers and inquisitors considering the 1M was never officially imported by BMW Japan and the best estimates are there are only around 30 or so in country.

On a small tangent I was quite surprised and pleased to have the GT4 owner offer to swap cars with me for a quick loop around the Tokyo freeways. Objectively I have to say that the Cayman GT4 is the more balanced precision driving machine, but following him in my Baby Beast had me fall in love all over again. The BB looks like a body builder on steroids, but moves in and out of traffic and around curves like the most elegant ballerina. There is only one thing that will ever sit in my one car garage.
