1-Series Coding?
Why isn't there anyone doing any coding for 1ers? At least there aren't really any threads or DIYs on the subject on this forum when I searched. It seems more popular on e90post and m3post, too bad there wasn't more of a demand on 1addicts. Coding would be such an awesome mod.
Fom my research so far, BMWhat is a quick and painless way to code and the first smartphone app to do so. In addition, it can check and clear fault codes, and other onboard diagnostics. Although I am tech savvy, I'm apprehensive of how much effort it takes to code using NCS Expert and having to deal with the different files. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on BMWhat but haven't decided whether to get the Android or iPhone version and which OBD2 adapter to get with the respective version. Anyone have any experience with BMWhat? If so, which version did you buy? Where did you buy your adapter and did you have any issues with it?

Havent seen this before but now im interested... I had my car coded by a member here a few years ago. He did it out of the bronx and didnt charge anything.
Really nice guy and everything came out great. When i moved down to florida my local dealership cleared all the coding off. This seems like a nice alternative to paying a shop several hundred dollars to code it. |

Coding is basically the same as the e9x which is why you don't see anything specifically for the e8x. There's simply more discussion on e90post and the bmw coding website.
That being said, BMWhat is a great app. It can't do *everything* but it can do a ton of stuff. |

Yes, BMWhat can't do everything yet, but has a decent list of things you can code. Hopefully, it can code most of the things I want to enable. Apparently, the developer continually updates the app with user requested coding and is known to reply quickly to user's tech support emails.

Just not as popular in the 1 community, considering there are probably hundreds, if not thousands more members on the e9x board.

BMWhat is great
For the money, BMWHat is great. I use to for the iPhone and bought a ELM 327 Wifi Adapter. If you use Android, I beleive you can use the bluetooth adapter which is cheaper. They say that their adapters are better tuned for their app but I was able to use my own ELM 327 wifi adapter.
I was able to successfuly code things for my 2007 Mini Cooper S and did a read on my 135 M Sport and almost all options were available to code. It's definitley worth the money if you want a option to do-it-yourself. If not, you can search for an vendor on the sites that does coding for $60 fro anything you want done on your car. he has a list of items. I actually used him for my 135 initially and all was good. He did it remotely since I had a cable and a mac that I installed his VM. He was great and is highly recommmended. |

I love BMWhat with ANDROID and the bluetooth adapter that they sell. I had mixed results with a cheapo bt adapter on amazon, but once I got the one that they made everything has worked great.
The only thing I could possibly want at this point is to disable idrive startup warning, and I'm not even sure if that is possible to do on a 2010 135. |

I coded my 1 series with inpa/ncs just fine. Its identical to coding the 3 series (and due to the way I had it set up, most inpa options were under e90, not e82/88.)
Coded digital speedo, comfort unlock, top down with remote (which mostly works... something mechanical is sticking, causing the roof to sometimes not have enough power to lift the top all the way), and mirrors fold on lock (have to recode this, lost it when I registered/coded a new battery). |

Honestly? Not hard at all. 99 for the cable, plus I spent 5 on a package set of everything needed to get set up, but that was just because I was being lazy.
I actually have to resetup my coding setup, since I blew away the windows vm it was in. |

Very interesting. I hadn't heard of BMWhat until this. I've put a little time into getting the software working but found the process pretty frustrating, and I'm a software developer by day. This might be exactly what I need, and I already have an ELM 327.

NCS Expert/INPA and the cable/adapter are definitely a cheaper option and I did consider it. But how much is your time worth, especially since your need to re-setup everything you lost? The learning curve, setup time and coding are definitely more time consuming. I want quick and dirty coding without having to manually code like a computer programmer. If you had BMWhat, you would just have to connect the smartphone app to your car and press a couple of buttons and, your coding is back.

BMWhat for Android and iPhone http://www.ivini-apps.com BMWhat Coding Overview http://www.ivini-apps.com/coding.html Apparently, the Android version has better value since the iPhone version is lacking in one feature (I forgot which one ). However, both can code equally as well, which is my primary reason for purchasing this app. The Android needs a Bluetooth OBD adapter and the iPhone needs a WiFi OBD adapter. I think some people have used a USB OBD adapter with success as well.
