Your water pump will go eventually (as you already know), and your brake light should follow, but you could be one of the lucky ones as far as the brake light goes and never have an issue.

Ouch, I'd have a conflict of loyalty after that...

Both my wife and daughter slam their trunks/hatchbacks all the time. I've told them that they don't need to be slammed, and even demonstrated on their own vehicles that they close and lock with very little effort. They both continue to do it, like it won't close properly without force. I'm obviously wrong, or just plain stupid. After all, they know their own cars. And who do I think I am, anyway? Telling them what to do... lol

Got my genuine BMW 3rd brake light warrantied and sitting in a box in the garage. I'll see how long the Dorman lasts.
It's strange, I got an RMA # and sent in my old light, never got any word from ECS and they ignored my email, but one day a new light just appeared at my door. I'm not complaining

So one FCP = 2 Amazon. I sure hope I'm not replacing it more than once more lifetime.

Just bought my 135, brought it home and the light broke off in my hand when I closed the trunk for the first time (probably too hard of a close). Less than 24 hours of ownership and here I am registered with a Dorman replacement is on the way, I figured I'd have an oil leak first.... Already read Dackleone's DIY so I'm ready to roll when the part shows up. Seems like the left side is what cracks on most photos (right where mine broke). Ahhh the joys of DIY.

My doorman came in, and I trimmed the metal on the lid back with my Dremel and touched it up with primer. The doorman also needed to be shaved on the bottom to fit. On the install, the left side (the one that seems to crack in all the photos), fit extremely tightly, while the right side dropped in place. either the punch die is tight or the light has some bulge. either way, I didn't force it and just got the seal gasket to compress a little. It is still standing a bit proud on the left side. REPEAT TO ONESELF: I will not tighten the nuts to pull the light into the body......

My e88 demands that I slam the trunk, otherwise I get the on-dash warning, but I am still on the replacement that I got when the dealer implemented the tsb. Maybe I have just been lucky.

I finally gave in and ordered a replacement from FCP this morning, since my light looks pretty bad.
FWIW, in regards to the post above, it’s not a common issue with Porsche 911 cars, particularly since one isn’t exactly opening the 911rear engine compartment all the time vs. an actual trunk. |

Have had my 1er two years now and it's my turn to replace my 3rd brake light. In my case though, it burned out. Apparently water was getting in the seal and the pigtail is also corroded so I'll be replacing that as well. I wanted to mention that my light did not crack. This is interesting because they were no springs or nuts on my light when I got in there so I'm assuming this is what allowed water to get in. At the same time, it probably prevented it from cracking. So on that note, there are different springs that BMW updated to which should be replaced along with the light. I ordered mine from Turner as the exact ones weren't that easy to find. So long story short, make sure to replace the springs to the proper ones when replacing your light!
