Group buys

Any thoughts on setting up group buying threads in the appropriate section? It is pretty sweet to walk in and dangle multiple sales to a CA, especially if there is a viable alternative dealer with competing offers. So, for example, anyone interested in a Mid-Missouri group buy? Probably a stretch, but those of you in the big markets (LA, SF, NY) ought to be able to make this work for you.

Well, anything I guess, but what I had in mind is the power that 3+ buyers bring to the table when negotiating a price on new cars. In my case, I am working on talking my brother into doing an ED buy with me from the same CA. The deal that ace008 and friends were able to get in SF is a good example. What a coup for the CA! That guy may end up with 10 sales! The power of the internet can put together several potential buyers that can broker a much better deal than any of them could as individuals. If I were a CA, or the sales manager, and 5 buyers walked in and said we want 5 E90s, at $500 over invoice or we go to your competitor, that is 2500 profit minimum, and a hard plum to pass up. It's what the monopoly of the dealerships has been doing to us for so many years, just now we can put the shoe on the other foot.

Sounds like a great idea. ED would be an ideal scenario for this type of purchasing, as the vehicles would not have to be shipped to one dealer, and then have everyone pick the vehicles up from the dealer. Transactions could be faxed, and payments made by check. I'm for it.

I be totally up for the group buy on the 335.

The only problem I see would be dealer allocations. A dealer may not be able to get 10 of them for us.

Euro Delivery usually is outside of the Dealership's regular allocations. Also, some dealership usually has an appointed ED specialist so mix-matching ED and regular sales might not have the leverage you'd hope for, when working with a specific CA.

Another idea to even out the geographical differences (accessing more dealers) is Performance Center Delivery. Regardless of the buyer/dealer location, everyone takes delivery at BMW's fine performance center.

With ED, all cars are shipped back to the original selling dealership. If you opt for a different location, you may have to incur extra charges (Courtesy Delivery).

For your reference, my dealership's standard internet dept pricing starts off at $500 over invoice ($1k over ED invoice), I'd reckon with your group leverage, you might be able knock that down a little more.

Good luck...

actually there's something called courtesy delivery that your vehicle can be delivered in most of the US BMW dealerships.

yea...DC isn't that far definitely. My only concerns now is the pricing ($ over invoice) and also how to go about to sell my car.

I heard that some NJ/NY dealerships near here have $500 over ED invoice. I remember I saw somebody got $500 over invoice? well...whatever dealership gives a good deal..

Yep as mentioned in my post...Courtesy Delivery is a $500 charge though

Also, its true, an awesome ED deal is typically anywhere from $750-$1k but I'd imagine $500 over ED invoice might be possible if the numbers are strong.

i actually found a $500 over ED invoice when I bought my E90 but had to take delivery in Chicago (kinda far). So if we do a group buy, it must be regional...like the entire Northeast.

it is not a bad idea but if they can sell the first allocation at msrp or a little off then you do not have a shot. I say wait a few months till the hype calms down and then go in for the kill.

I think the fellas have a good shot at getting a good price over invoice for ED as ED slots are outside the dealership's assigned allocation by BMW NA. So any ED sale is extra icing on their annual sales/revenues. Try it out and let us know of your progress. I'd aim for the larger and higher volume dealerships especially those experienced in ED.

OK, now what we need to do is start some running lists by area. We could start with the BMWCCA regions. To simplify: LA, SF, NorthWest (Seattle, Portland,+), AZ, CO, TX, Midwest (Chicago, St. Louis, +), Northeast (Boston, NY, DC), SE (Atlanta, FL). Not sure how to split up Canada.

If you think you might be in the market for a bimmer this fall, send a note to this thread with area, and we will see if there is enough interest in any of the groups. Then each of us can approach (via email or walk-in) dealers locally and see what pricing they will work with. This may be tough, and it may boil down to local dealers matching the group offer. Seems worthwhile to give it a try, especially for ED.
