And I ordered PS3's too. 225-40-18 and 255-35-18 for my 313's. Already have the PS2's on the Breytons. Hope it will be a good choice.

I think you will be happy. Just take it easy for the first 500 kms bc these tires are kind of "greasy" at first, until they break in.

Brand new tires may still have a thin film on them. It's not unlike what my tires often seem like for the first couple hundred yards after they've been washed and cleaned. It wears off pretty quickly depending on the tire and how you drive.

All tires have a release agent on them so they come out of the tire molds when made. This oil takes some miles to "wear off" the outer surface. After say 400 miles the tires feel have much more grip. But at first new tires will feel "soft" and "greasy/slippery". What I mean by "greasy" is that the tires have a lot less grip and seem to have larger slip angles, but after a few hundred miles... they really "come alive".

Hey Dack, if you could buy PSS's for your next tyres at the same price as the PS3's... would you? I'm currently wondering which one to go with. PSS's off tirerack are well priced but at the same time local dealers are giving me amazingly competative quotes on the PS3s.

I guess having local warranty on the tyres and free fitting is a decent +1 for the PS3s...

I think they are pretty much the same tire underneath the thread. ie: the tire carcus is the same. I would get the PS3's.

I would buy local if you can. That was the reason why I went with PS3's vs PSS's thru Tire Rack. I just did not want to deal with any hassles IF something went wrong. Its always better to deal with a local dealer.

No problem buddy! Also... you might ask your tire dealer... Michelin over here offers a 30 euro fuel card from Shell, when you buy Michelin tires. Its not much but its something.

Thanks! Indeed it is something worthwhile. I'll enquire with Michelin AUS but I doubt they'd have the deal here... competition isn't as competative yet. Haha.

great post...
my next ones will be PS2 or PS3
PS2: front 225/40R18 + 245/35R18 or
PS3: front 225/40R18 + 255/35R18

this option of spare is great and can leave us with clean conscience

Well… I needed to replace my run flats and I really did not know what to get. At first I thought those Conti DW’s looked good and the price seemed decent. But then I started to read some negative posts about the soft sidewalls and poor steering response. I know a lot of the 1er German guys run Hancooks – but I have heard they don’t really have that much traction (dry or wet) – so they were out too.

One thing I really loved about the RSC (run flat) Dunlap’s was their sharp turn in and steering response. After some more research I ended up deciding on not skimping with my tire choice. By all accounts Michelin’s PS2’s are one of THE best tires out there for our cars. I think there IS a reason why BMW and Porsche choose this tire as OE. When I checked with my local tire dealer… they told me that Michelin now has the PS3’s which have replaced the PS2. PS3’s it would be!

I was seriously considering getting the Conti Sport Contact-3 tires… but the Michelin’s were only 50 euros more for a set of four. So… I went with Michelin PS3’s.

I also decided to go with the 225/255 wider meats. When I asked the BMW Zentrum about those sizes, they replied a big NEIN! When I asked my tire dealer… he said to go with 225/245’s. Because when he looked up the rear tires it says only to go with a 245 on 8.5 wide wheels. But I decided to listen to all the great posts here and trust my fellow 1addicts! I am glad I did!

The guy at the tire dealer was asking me what kind of five series I had… when I told him I had a 1er he did not believe me at first! I think I am the first guy to mount such wide meats on a 1er over here. Especially since TUV would not approve of such large tires on OEM wheel widths. But everything worked and I don’t have to worry about any stinking TUV! Since I have cover plates.

My tire shop included a free 4 wheel alignment check. The front settings were dead on but my right rear toe was out of spec. Perhaps this was why my car was also so squirrely at high speeds. When I would travel over bumps or dips about 120 mph to 155 mph it felt like the front toe was changing. Now this feeling is 90% gone. I think this is due more to the larger tires than the right rear toe being off.

I got my PS3’s mounted last week. Since then I have driven some 1,500 kms. This weekend I drove to Essen (450 kms each way) to go to the Techno Classica car show. It was a perfect opportunity to break the new tires in.

When I first got the tires… They felt really smooth. They ride much smoother than run flats do. The best way I can describe it, is that the run flats feel like they are made out of very hard rubber. Almost like the run flats are not round but square. While the PS3’s feel like good sticky tires should, sporty, direct and compliant over bumps. Just like everyone has said here… the difference between run flats and non run flats – is night and day. Gone is the bouncy hopping ride with run flats. When I travel over a small dip in the road – I don’t feel the DTC kicking in anymore. Now the car feels much more comfortable to drive over bumps and small dips in the road surface. I am happy with the PS3’s.

I do miss the run flats high speed turn in response though. But the PS3’s are darn close in (steering, turn in) performance. And in all other performance aspects the Michelin’s are such a better performance tire. Heads and shoulders above the OE Dunlap’s.

Those first few hundred kilometers had me wondering IF I had made a mistake. Because it took the Michelin’s about 400 kms before they felt “good”. Braking and cornering was kind of scary at first. Literally the first 10 kms on the Autobahn I came upon a Ferrari Testarossa with dealer plates on who wanted to race me. It took all my restraint to not race him. lol But really after about 300 or 400 kms the Michelin’s really came into their own. I drove very fast and confidently on the way back from Essen.

One plus is that the larger tire size has seemed to give me a 3 kph higher top speed. lol Now my car does 243 on my GPS where before it would only do 240 kph. Not a big deal. The larger tires seem to work better at high speeds too. I don’t have that toe change when I travel over bumps at warp 8 speeds.

[FONT=Verdana]I also really like the way the larger tires fill the wheel wells. It gives my car a meaner look/stance. ....
Hi Dackelone, I have been thinking on change my tires from 215/245 to 225/255 but i have read on some post that rear tires may be damaged because of the size, same answer i got from Tire Rack, have you ever experienced any issue with your tires? What if the car is overloaded? thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend the 225/245 or 225/255 setup. Actually the 255 rears are slightly cheaper than 245's! lol That ought to tell you everyone is buying 255's from Michelin!

I have had no problems with rubbing. A few times I have had four people in my car. Once at the Welt this year... I had six! lol But just for one block in the rain.

The 255's fit fine on the 8.5 inch rear wheels. Technically in the wheel guide books... you need a 9" wide wheel for a 255 tire. But we are only talking about 10mm's and it works fine.

The first few days I would hear some tire rubbing from the rear. Only when the suspension went into full swing/compression. Just a tad - nothing bad. Then it stops. No rubbing since that first few days. Was like that with my 2nd rear set of tires. I've driven now over 30K kms on these PS3's and I really love them. 99% of 1addicts seem to agree. Make sure you get the versions with the XL(EL) load rating for a stiffer sidewall.

These are the tires I have:

Michelin PS3 FSL (I think the same as PSS in the states):
225/40ZR18 EL 92Y TL
255/35ZR18 EL 94T TL

Hey Dack (or anyone else)...when I put the OEM size PSS in a cart @ Tirerack, I get this "warning".
What's up with that? Anything to be concerned with?

Our cars came with rear 245's from the factory(!) - so they fit just fine!!

And 255's rears fit just fine as well. Like I said above... there is minimal rubbing for the first few miles - then it stopped for me. For a second here and there. More like a scrape here and there - as the rear suspension moved thru its full compression. I have not seen anyone else even say their's rubbed.

Rear 255's work just fine on our OE alloy wheels.

No uneven tread wear at all. But its normal to burn thru the rear tires way before the fronts will wear out. Sometimes it is a two or three to one ratio! For me two!

Putting close to 400 HP thru the rears does not promote long tire life!

PS: BMW is now equipping all F20's and F30's with 225/245 tires. That ought to tell you that our 225/255 setup works just fine. The 255's in the back are really the way to go - along with PSS tires. Pretty much everyone on 1addicts seems to concur.

i have the BMW performance suspension and run 225/255 RE-11 tires (much wider than ps3 in same size) and experience zero rubbing

i would not worry about it
