on a bmw 335 AT, there is noticeable lag on a paddle shift. plus it automatically shifts too early before the redline on hard acceleration

bmw MTs have too long a clutch throw

Manual vs. Automatic

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Right now I drive a 2005 Mercedes which is an automatic. I have several friends that drive a stick, and after several conversations I maybe swaying towards learning and buying the 135 in a stick. I was just wondering what fellow BMW or future BMW owners think.

So the question is Manual or Auto? Why?

I agree most people feel like manual is faster but very few (about 8% according to road and track) can hit the published 0to60 times for manual where as the auto takes no efforet to match times for any normal driver.

Also after owning a manual 05 Sti with an exedy clutch I will never drive stick again especially in Nyc

It's not about the speed. It's about the involvement.

I'm confused. Are you mocking that statement or agreeing with it?

Times have really changed. I remember when 60% of all 3-series were manuals, now it might be half that. I feel anything smaller than a 5 series should be a stick because it's a BMW! BMW's are drivers cars that are engaging and the best way to experience the essense of a BMW is to DRIVE it!

when my dealers talked about deposit he said that manual 135i's or 128's would be a 1500$ instead of 500$ because in the tri state (nj ny ct) area autos are a much easier resale...

I was going to go with a stick 128 but now i am going with the auto 135i....esp cuz the diff is .1 secs

def having a laugh at it...
i guess drivers fall into 3 categories:

a)Die hard stick drivers from start to finish

b)tried stick, liked it but hated it in traffic

c)only drove auto and doesnt know any better

I for one fall into category b
and plus this car will be a family car...and will see the track maybe once a year

Whatever your personal preference is. I have always wanted a manual so my 1er will be manual.

Nothing feels better than nailing that rev-matched downshift or heel-toeing left into an intersection.

Manual driving is definitely more engaging imo.

What's the difference in feel between an upgraded "sporty or race" clutch vs. stock?

According to My Wife...

autos are for girls. Manuals are for women. A poster on another site uses the tag line "I'd buy a Step but my wife can't drive one". I love it, because I don't have to use my wife or hills or traffic as an excuse for buying an automatic. I live in the SF Bay area and drive in SF all the time and traffic is everywhere. Don't care. Not a problem. Oh, yes. Then there's the wife. She'd disown me if I came home with an auto trans. You see, she drives a '98 528i Sport with manual 5-speed, she's got 140K on the original clutch and she commutes in traffic 5 days a week. And she can drive the hell out of that car. Very sexy, indeed!

A BMW with an auto trnmission is a waste. And the paddle shifters, while a wonderful toy, does not turn your ride into a F1 car.

Manual all the way!

Don't waste your money on an automatic BMW. Hell, they shouldn't even offer an auto in the 135i. The 1 series is supposed to be the revival of the 2002 (I think it's the e30). Light, compact, powerful, nimble. And a manual transmission. A car that is to be driven. Not to be controlled for you by a computer chip in your slush box. If you want the full experience the 135i was desgined to provide, go 6 speed manual!

well the stock clutch was light and was some what forgiving, the after market race clutch was torture if you did not nail it right. It shuddered on late down shifts, felt incredible heavy when it wasnt warmed up and also made it nearly impossible to reverse with out a ton of gas

i cant wait for auto...
if i need to drive stick there is always my auto x beast...evo 8

Well.....in June of 2006 my wife took delivery of her new Cayman S (with the Porsche "tiptronic" auto transmission). She had been driving a 1995 Acura Integra with a 5 speed manual. She was tired of the manual in traffic so she opted for the tiptronic for her new "baby". I drive it on occasion when I need it for a special event. (I love it for going to the golf course with my friend. Two people and two golf bags.....perfect.) But that's not important for this discussion. The point is that for the first 6 months or so the automatic was fine (but only when driven in paddle shift mode. Full auto mode.......hate it). After the novelity wore off I found myself really not liking the auto. There is no "involvement" while driving. You really miss shifting, even in traffic. I now find as much (well almost as much) pleasure in driving her 12 year old Acura as the Porsche. I'm commuting in the Acura for now while I wait for my new 135i........with the manual tranny.
Is it spring yet !!!!!
