No prep needed, I've done a bunch of them in my E30 in years past. Having owned a 128i M Sport, you have a great car for autocrossing; E82 is as close to a modern day E30 as you'll ever get. Good luck, but most importantly have fun!

Look up the web site for the local group running the autox and see what it says- most likely SCCA

Here's out local chapter Novice first event page, your local chapter will have something similar-
http://www.dixiescca.com/event-first.html

our events also do a novice walk early in the morning where event officials specifically tasked with care & feeding of first timers walk the course with all the new folks (and anybody else that wants to follow & listen to the course tips they offer) and the lay out all the things you should be thinking/doing/looking at(for) as you progress around the very short course. The help you understand what initially looks like a sea of cones so you can get the course in your head. They will encourage you walking the course several more times on your own after the official course walk.

The local sponsoring chapter wants you to have fun more than anything else- they really really want you to come back!

Oh, and comfy tennis shoes and sun screen.

I've never done an event with the BMWCCA but I've beeing doing autocross for the past two years with my own 128i. It's a blast.

My biggest advice is to talk to people there. Most clubs are real welcoming to new people and if you start talking to some of the folks who have been doing it for a while you can learn a lot.

In addition to the course walks already mentioned, sometimes clubs will pair novices with instructors for the first couple of runs to give some feed back. If they're availible I recommend having instructors ride along every chance you get for a while.

As far as the car itself, you really don't need much. Just some masking tape for the numbers and an inflator and pressure guage. I air up the tires a bit above manufacturer spec before the runs. Then check between runs and let some out as needed to keep it where I want it. If you're running the stock allseason runflats and you stick with autocross, you'll eventually want to get some good summer tires. However, I'd keep things as is for a couple events starting out.

this is my 128 at a bmwcca autocross a few weeks ago. as your see it is completely stock.

I have only done a couple, and had a blast! take your car there, enjoy, and learn from the more experienced. usually there is option to have an instructor riding with you.
I would also recommend to try and ride as a
passenger in somebody else's car, or have someone experienced drive your car for a round while you are a passenger.

bmwcca folk are very welcoming and they will help you have fun and learn your car.

post some pictures from your runs!

If you haven't already gone - I would suggest pumping your front tires up at least +5psi over where you normally run them. The stock configuration of a 128i is understeer-city and is going to be very hard on your tires, the increased pressure will help them keep their form while you are pushing them.

I went. It was my first time. I walked the track as a novice. Let me infer, I didn't know what I was looking for. Orange cones were upstanding and lime green laying down as "pointers". All appeared, unintelligible. Yes I was there, alone. I had eight runs. DNF was my standard 5. But, I did get some times and I am posted on the board. See pic. The event was very fun for this car nut..

so you did not get any instruction? they did not show you around and explain what to look for in the track, cones, gates, slaloms, etc?
this sounds a bit unwelcoming to a novice from the club's side.
