UOA Results - Motul 8100 Xcess - N55 Running E85 blend (E50)

[OP 09NOV2015]

For those interested, I am posting my UOA results. Oil is Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 with 4,000 miles. About 3,000 miles were on E50, and about 1,000 on 91.

My car is FBO running JB4 and BMS BEF. I run map 6 which completely maxes out the turbo when E50 is in the tank, and map 5 when on 91. About 3,000miles was with an AFE dry drop in filter and 1,000 miles with an Injen intake. This oil sample also included a day of 1/2 mile racing at NFZ in Arizona where I ran at least 25 WOT runs up to about 144 MPH in 85 degree weather.

My plan is to change the oil every 5-6k, but my research showed differing opinions on the impact of E85 on motor oil. So to be safe, I completed an oil change at 4k miles and sent a sample out for analysis. Per the results, it seems I can go easily up to a 6k OCI and that the Motul X-cess oil is holding up well.

I would be glad to hear any additional comments from others on the results and hope this helps answer questions others may have on running e85 or this particular oil.

[END OP 09NOV2015]

[UPDATE 14FEB2017]

My current oil was at 12 months so I decided to have another UOA completed. This sample is also Motul Xcess 8100 5w-40. Mileage on the oil was only 3,225, but this sample included six 20min sessions at buttonwillow raceway where my oil temps hit 280 degrees on multiple occasions. Seems like this oil is performing well as expected so I will most likely stick with this brand. Any comments are welcome.

How many miles are on your motor? Have you run any oils other than Motul (besides factory fill of course)?

Mileage on motor is 43,989. Listed as "MI/HR Unit" on the mid upper left of the report.

This is the only oil I have used other than what the dealership used for free maintenance. The oil I drained before this sample was from the dealership, so this sample may have some castrol mixed in with it. Not sure if it has any impact on the results.

Sorry, missed that in the report. I should have known, since I use Blackstone all the time.

The results look pretty good on your report, especially for all the aggressive driving you've done. It would be interesting to see how a run of standard BMW oil compares to this UOA.

all good. I forgot it was there too haha

yeah, hopefully someone else has a UOA they can post running BMW or any other oil; especially with E85 blends. I have about 21 more quarts of 8100, and per the results, I probably wont switch. Would love to see UOA of something like AMSOIL or Redline as well.

I don't think using E85 or E10 will affect your oil life either way. You don't seem to be suffering from fuel dilution with your driving habits either.

I've done UOAs with BMW (Castrol) oil, Castrol and LiquiMoly and all three are very similar with respect to wear metals.

With your OCI, I'm not sure I would pay extra for any boutique oil.

yeah agree. I got the motul oil for a good price. 7 quarts ended up costing me about $55-60. I guess I may test something like castrol or mobil 1 once I run out of the motul because I can get them for much cheaper, probably half the price.

Wow that's a lot of iron. Used to seeing <10 on most engines?

Do you have any documentation indicating the iron levels are high?

Per the report, my sample had 41 and universal averages are around 50. So I was under the impression that my Iron levels were low.

Did some quick research, it does seem that most analysis are showing universal averages around mid 20s, right around 27. Could be the average for an engine with higher mileage is higher, I'm not sure. I know I use a magnetic drain plug and usually catch a nice little gathering of shavings on mine. If you don't use one already, maybe get one for the next oil change and see how that affects your iron levels.

Looks good. In fact your iron wear rate dropped on this run. I think you could easily do 5,000 miles with your driving style and this oil.

Thanks for looking at the results. Completely agree about the 5k interval. Ended up changing it out because I hit the 12 month mark before 5k. Which means I need to drive my car more!

I have not retested as my car has been running great. I haven’t tested 8100 max so I can’t comment on that. The 8100 xcess has been great for me.

I just put this stuff into my mew to me N55 and it seems to be smoother and quieter at idle. I don't know what was in it before or how long it was in there. It didn't look too bad.

I've been a Mobil 1 fan for life but they are no longer LL-01 rated.
