This is a problem with the N54 motor's supporting equipment since it has been an ongoing problem with 335's as well. It has nothing to do with the 135's first year being sold in the states.

Yeah, seriously, what turbo lag? Have you driven one yet? The car has as much lag as any NA engine car I've driven, which is essentially none.
I'm confused at what problem you're refering to?

He's talking about the new ECU software that BMW has uploaded into some cars -- there are many threads about it and people complaining of increased turbo lag after. Let's stick to the fuel pump issue, whcih seems more pressing.

Should I be contacting my dealer about taking my car in to be checked?
EDIT: Oh, I reread the OP -- it's just for those who have had their fuel pump replaced who need worry at this point? |

Not necessarily, i'm sure many original fuel pumps fall within the 'bad' fuel pumps. however there is nothing we as techs can do if your car is not having bad fuel pump symptoms, i.e., long cranking/loss of power.

Thanks for the quick reply, been reading up on E90 Post. So there's no order *yet* to replace all HPFPs with improved units? How long would I have to get my car to a dealer once symptoms show themselves? My dealer of choice is 45 miles away.

My 135 had been built at the beginning of July. Do you think that it would have the good or bad fuel pump?
The fuel pump issue really worry me. I thought that they have fixed it during the first 2 years of 335 production. I am surprise to see the same issue with our 1s. |

I brought home the email, here are some excerpts. hopefully they will answer some of your questions.
"Due to the manufacturing error at the HDP housing suppliers (incorrect tolerances and contamination causing an internal pump leak) the high pressure pump may fail prematurely. The most common failure mode would be the complaint of 'long cranking time of 4 to 5 seconds', or power reduction mode... Affected were both part numbers 13 51 7 585 655 and 13 53 7 537 320 used for service replacement and in the new vehicle production. The 'new vehicle' production range affected by this quality issue is to be determined'. This is the procedure we are to use to check if the replacement pump is viable. 1. Locate the supplier's identification and production numbers. If the number from the top line consists of any four digits, a forward slash symbol (/), and the numbers 07 or 08 at the end, then the HDP pump is defective and should not be used. 2. If the number from the top line consists of any five digits, then proceed with further inspection. Locate the production date and if the numbers are: 08051 08053 08071 08072 08073 08078 08080 Then the HDP pump is defective. I think once they determine the new vehicle production range affected, BMW will release some sort of service action/recall. Until then I think replacement will be complaint based. It does not seem like new good pumps will be in limited supply. The purge of all pumps was concluded today at parts distribution centers and parts ordering by dealers is suppose to resume normally. Hope that helps. |

My car went into limp mode again on the way to Loiusville to catch a flight a few days ago. I nailed it getting on an on ramp and it just didn't go anywere. Once the light came on it started running really rough. I pulled over and shut it down for a couple of seconds and then restarted. It ran rough for a couple more minutes and then smoothed out and felt normal the rest of the trip. This is the second time it's gone into limp, so I'm taking it in ASAP.
Sucks, because now I'm afraid to put my downpipes on the car until I'm sure it's resolved. |

Has there been any update on this issue? I just got off the phone with a mate whose 135i Coupe just died. He was having a slow crank-over during cold starts and then the other day, he put his foot down, and the engine died completely. It started up again soon afterwards, but had a fault light which was diagnosed by the dealer as a faulty fuel pump. Sounds familiar.
Message for all N54 (twin-turbo six) owners ... if your car takes several seconds to crank over in the mornings, it appears that your fuel pump could be faulty. Get it checked rather than wait for it to fail completely.

Holy crap I thought I was going insane! I am bringing my car in tomorrow for an oil change 5K and I am going to make an issue out of this. For the past two months my car has been having hard starting and long cranking issues. Hot, cold it doesn't matter. I also noticed that power on the car seems way down and not even close to as when I first got it. I thought it was all in my head but it makes sense now. In fact I even thought the golf tee mod had something to do with it. Well now I know that is not the case. I feel much better knowing that the issue is the fuel pump and that there should be a resolution to the problem.

Well, it's hard to say for sure.. I was driving a 335xi loaner car for a few days, so it feels like a rocket right now anyway. Just as a side-note, I have to say the 135i feels WAY sportier/faster than that loaner!

Mine was produced in May, and it had a defective one. I sent my car in, and it was replaced with a new one. Unfortunately, this "new one" is part #13 51 7 585 655, which we now know from bimmertech that this is a bad one also.
Any suggestions? Can I just go back in and demand the right one? |
