I'm at 135000 Km or ~84000 miles. So far, so good, but I'm actually unsure if I have the original waterpump since I bought the car used in June. It's a 2008. It's been mine since June 2013.

You can go to any BMW dealer and they can look up the service record for you. I think your's must have been replaced before.

Who knows? I can tell the previous owner was not a true enthusiast and maybe not even a car person. But I'll go to a dealer and ask them to bring it up to see if it has been done!

2008. Honestly, I'm very surprised it hasn't gone out. I look at it as a maintenance part- I would push any owner to change theirs every 60k to be safe. As I'm going a little longer, I'm changing the hoses for the pump also at the same time.

If I were writing the maintenance schedule, I'd so the level 1 cooling system maintenance (water pump, thermostat) at 60k and a level 2 (add radiator and hoses) at 120.

This is scary. Has the part been updated/upgraded after 2008/9?

Do we have a DIY for replacement? It will take me a LONG time to rack this many miles up but still, something to think about. $1500 for a full cooling service plus pump is rather excessive.

Yes, I believe BMW has changed the vendor and design. Just look at this survey... from 2010 the failure rates are much lower. But still there.

Also... there are many places selling OE pumps(and electronic thermostats) for around $600(discounted). And there are a few places selling OEM for around $500. Most shops seem to charge around one to two hours labor.

There has been one DIY here on 1Addicts that I remember. IF you search over on the e90forum you will find many more DIY's for the waterpump.

Thanks. I attributed the differences possibly to lower overall miles on the newer cars... Don't know I can read anything statistical into it yet... But let's hope!!

Ill look for the DIY on E90, but is it going to be similar? Id imagine the 1er will be a LOT tighter for one thing... Not sure if what/how to remove stuff will be the same???

I had previously responded to the poll that the pump was fine on my 2008 at about 40k miles. Then 2 weeks ago, my pump failed with about 43K on the clock. Left me stranded on the side of the road on a cold rainy morning on the way to work. Had the extended warranty and it was fixed and back in my hands after about 3 days. This was the 1st time a BMW (I've owned 5, including 2 M3's) has left me stranded.

2009 135i, 58K, failed a week ago, cost of repair: over $1200 in NJ, out of warranty, seriously considering getting rid of within a year before anything else hits.

Wonder if the 128 runs as high water temperature.

My Saab and Chevy truck runs water temp around 182F in normal use... My 135 is more like 220F. The fact that normal use is above boiling temperature (not adjusted for pressurization).

That's what I would call a ticking time bomb. I would get it replaced ASAP before it fails and leaves you stranded on the side of the road. You don't really get a warning that it's going, it just....goes. You're on borrowed time my friend.

You're probably guessing right on. No temp gauge in the 128 so I don't know what mine runs at Other than temperature I can't think of another reason to attribute the difference in failures.

Is there a way to check the integrity of the water-pump on a 135i? I have 2008 135i with 38,000?

Many thanks!

2008 135i, N54, 30k, waterpump failed while in traffic.

A part of the housing broke up and jammed the impeller.

Goodwill replacement, with parts cost only (free labour) = £500GBP; would have been £1000GBP with labour.

Previous to the fail the car threw a code relating to deviations in waterpump speed.
