Wils' E82 Smiles per mile build

I should introduce myself to the forum and I figure what better way then to get you up to speed on what I'm doing.. you may notice in the background I have a '15 F10d, this N57 has an upgraded turbo, intercooler, deletes, downpipe, remap, etc. That's my daily.

This past Summer, after having some F10 fatigue where I was doing more maintenance/upgrades/tweaking to the car than I wanted for my daily, a friend placed an order for a new C8 Corvette and indicated it would be used at CMP -- which is a nearby racetrack.

OK Cool! I'm going to build something for 1/3rd the price and see if it can hang! I went searching for something fun, something that could take some serious power, and something that I could wrench on myself. I remembered back to when I was 19 years old and the 1-series was just being released, I worked at BMW as a Lot jockey, myself and another "trusted employee" had the honor of driving our new vehicles to the dealerships offsite storage, a 15min spirited drive where all driving nannies clearly came off. Well the driver in front of me in a brand new 135i dusted off a couple layers of gravel into the front end of the 135i that I was driving... ~$25k in damage, oddly enough, it was the last time I drove a 135i until purchasing one sight unseen this past year!

Took a flight to where the car was being sold as-is -- at a dealer -- picked up the car and drove it home after catching a quick baseball game.

It had a small oil leak at the oil cooler gaskets, plus what appears to be another small leak at the transmission pan gasket -- Cool, that's why they didn't want to certify the car. No problem. I know I need to take care of maintenance before it starts pushing for decent numbers, it has about 110,000km (66,000Mi). It's been parked for the last month, as I accumulate what is needed to build a tire-shredder. It won't really get used until next year.

What I have ordered so far;

All new hoses, vacuum lines, fluids
New gaskets - oil cooler, trans, valve cover, intake, turbo
Water pump + race thermostat
1-step colder plugs + new ignition coils
4bar MAP sensor
BMS Intake
BMS Intercooler + piping
BMS Oil Cooler internal component upgrade
BMS Charge pipe
VRSF downpipe
MHD tune
xHP transmission tune (DCT)

- Brakes to SS lines and upgraded pads/rotors/fluids on next service.
- BC Coilovers are also on the radar
- Turbo + fuel upgrades.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head..

Any thoughts, concerns, comments, must adds?

Looks good! If it's a N54 I'd make sure to replace the oil filter housing gaskets. That's the first thing I had to do on mine!

Says N55 in his profile and he listed the DCT tune mod

Speaking of which, please post your before/after feedback on the DCT tune. I have N55/DCT with MHD tune and considering the DCT tune but not a lot of feedback on the forum.

If coilovers are pushing the budget and you want to improve the suspension components, look into a front sway bar and M3 control arms. You can run E30 with the stock LPFP and some have pushed the envelope and gone E40 or even E50 but I would suggest upgrading the LPFP. My E82 is in the shop right now getting the Hotchkis front sway bar installed, NGK 97506 plugs, addressing a few leaks, and an upgraded fuel pump. I went with https://boostconcepts.net/products/f...-fuel-pump-kit. E30 resulted in a nice bump in power, I'm eager to see what E50 does.

I'm leaning towards the Pure stage 1, other than the cost of stage 2 the install is pricier if paying a shop to do it and some DCT owners have stated clutch slips >450 ft/lbs torque. IMO, a mechanical diff should also accompany the high HP builds. Stage 2 turbo can add up quickly.

With all the power mods, be sure to do something with suspension/chassis as well. RSFBs and the like at minimum.

Since I already had xHP software on my F10d, I switched it so quick on the 135i I don't even know what the stock shifts were like... but the news is..

My F10 took a nail in the sidewall on one of the rear 275s

I took it to the shop where I store my winters and switched over to them today, I don't feel like shredding off my Hakkas in warm weather so I am sending my 135i to a trusted mechanic to speed things up.. going to drive the 135i for a few more weeks before the temps really drop.

When it's back at the end of next week I'll flash back to stock DCT map and play around a bit to see how they differ... I'm excited that my winter plans are going to get hurried along... Looks like coil-overs may be my project instead.

I really haven't started considering/educating myself on the costs of the different turbo setups... https://www.turbosystems.info/produc...e-turbocharger I ordered my hybrid turbo for my N57 through them and it's been stellar so I wouldn't discount them if the pricing is favorable.

I'm thinking BC coilovers, some bushings, mounts, sways + endlinks.. Hoping that some quality pads and rotors will make the stock "brembos" OK.

Just had Hotchkis front sway bar installed with the adjustable end links and happy with the results. Car feels tighter, more "darty" and less body roll. It just started raining so I haven't taken it to the canyons yet but for the $ it was a worthwhile upgrade. I have to take it back to the shop that installed it tho as it's making a slight clunking noise at full lock that wasn't there before. Hotchkis has the thickest front bar and some members on here prefer the the E92 M3 front bar as they claimed the Hotckis might result in the car being too stiff but I disagree, it's only slightly stiffer than before. I already had TC Kline coils, Swift springs, and M3 control arms. I shopped around a lot and Tirerack had the Hotchkis bar at the lowest price and in stock, most other retailers had a 4 week wait time and were more expensive.

Can someone explain to me why the swift springs are popular? I know nothing about them, other than I see that they're a $400 upgrade when ordering BC coilovers... What's the scoop?

Nice congrats! I just picked up a 13 N55 DCT, loving it so far. Make sure you do the SIB 12 15 14 update if not already applied and also you can flash the 135is dct software for free as well.

For coilovers since you're tracking, I'd recommend going KW V2/V3 or ST if you are not going to be driving in the winter. M3 control arms are also a nice upgrade for not much money.

To do the SIB and get the 135is dct tune it has to be brought to a dealer? Just wondering as i don't think my 135i has had this update but i am tuned with MHD. Will they refuse to do the update because i'm tuned or does it not matter? Sorry new to this still so trying to learn something new every day. Thanks in advance!

You can do it yourself if you setup all the BMW tools on a windows laptop. If you do it make sure you flash mhd back to stock first, dealer or at home just to be safe.

Cool thank you for the info. Just wondering what is the difference between the standard Dct tune and the 135is Dct tune? Appreciate it!

It feels smoother to me (could be placebo) but the main thing is the raised launch control RPM I believe. Definitely do it though, takes like 5minutes and is free.

for myself I went straight to xHP transmission tune, it allows you to adjust your launch control, and so many other things.. basically makes that SIB irrelevant, same with the 135is shift map. Free is free though and xHP is not.

She's going to see mostly the street so I'm definitely considering something that's not purely a harsh track setup.. I see you're in Ontario too so I've got Bilstein B14s lined up at $1000cad tax and shipped. They seem to review well, doubt I'll get a reputable brand for any less. Considering pulling the trigger but I'm also pricing out a Wavetrac LSD rn. I think I'm going to sell my Subaru to keep funding this party, lol.

Forsure i've heard great things about xhp but just not ready yet to dish out that much for the dct tune yet, possibly if i keep the car and upgrade the turbo or do further mods that's the trannys stock tune wont like too much i will forsure consider it. Thanks for the info again!

Right on, that makes sense! I'm pretty much done with power mods until I get the suspension and chassis caught up.. really want an LSD. so.. B14s, Wavetrac and M3 control arms, then we'll discuss turbo and fuel! For the 7spd DCT my fav xHP feature is creep disable, which prevents the clutch from engaging until you press on the gas.

Yea i wish i could get that feature without spending the big bucks lol. I just try to not creep at all and keep on the brake until everything starts moving. Once someone started honking at me because i didn't creep up like half a car length I just laughed and thought to myself ah people that don't have patience and think think that creeping up is gonna make a difference. Anyways have a great night and i'm following the build! Keep it up

Hahaha I hear ya, but it's not that bad.. $229 tax incl to be able to make adjustments, another $229 for Map packs, + you need a compatible dongle ($40). lifetime of map/feature updates and unlimited flashes.

for me I found that the transmission would be loaded (engaging against the brakes) when I was at a red light or driving in stop & go traffic, creep disabled the car needs a prompt from the gas pedal before it starts engaging the driveline.

happy motoring!

Do you happen to know if xhp resets the DCT’s adaptations?
