Dealer won't install my BMW Performance part...
So I bought a new BMW performance exhaust online from a dealership and wanted the dealer local to me to install (Crevier BMW in So cal). They told me they wouldn't install it unless it was purchased from them... anyone else run into issues like this? Is it standard for the dealer to insist on parts being purchased from them?
Thanks Last edited by dorkytom; 05-04-2012 at 08:36 PM.. |

Pretty normal. Don't waste your money getting aftermarket items installed at the dealer. Find a good independent shop in the area and have them put it on... or do it yourself.

I was trying to maintain the warranty by having them install it... I guess I didn't do my homework, and just assumed since the part was new and made by bmw there would be no issue with a dealer installing

It will not negatively affect your warranty to have someone else instal it. An exhaust is pretty basic. I did my own mid pipes and rear section several times so far and the dealer hasn't said boo. FWIW, I had never done any exhaust work prior to playing around with my 1er.

on a positive note. irrevelant of who installs it, the part carries a 2year unlimited mileage warranty... lets say the OP installs it himslf, and in 1 year the baffel goes bad and it rattles.. he can bring it to any BMW dealer and they will not only supply a new part, but do the labor also under a parts warranty.... SO... overall it is not so bad....

Wow just contacted Shelly BMW nearby they had no problem doing it but they wanted $660 to do the install... I think I may do it myself or have an independent shop do it.

hahahaha $660... It takes an hour, if that. Even less if you have a lift. What a joke.

Why shouldn't they install authorized BMW parts?
I know they're angy you didn't buy it from your local dealer but with labor rates of $130/hr or whatever they charge they are still making plenty of money. I would complay to BMW NA.

When my wife's 2011 128i Convertible was delivered, the BMW PE I ordered for it came in at the same time. The dealer wanted $220 to install it, even with my BMWCCA discount. I took it home and, with the help of a friend, removed the stock muffler and installed the PE within about an hour. I measured carefully and used blue tape to mark where to cut, and even removed the rear valance for more room to work. I used the following DIY link: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=450937

I installed my original Berk axleback myself with just ramps. When I got the Berk full street exhaust I had my dealership install it (midpipes and axleback). Took an hour and a half and about 200 bucks IIRC. You're getting ripped off. Keep shopping around for dealers, or go to another shop. The parts are warrantied by BMW for 2 years, and most reputable shops have a labor warranty. So if something about the part itself goes bad, BMW replaces it. If something with the installation makes the part go bad, the shop will replace it. Either way, someone will replace it, and there's nothing to really "go bad" on an exhaust anyway. It won't interfere with your regular vehicle warranty either.

While I'm not sure this is the sole reason for their refusal to install it, I do believe the attitude you describe is prevalent. As long as they can be sure the customer-provided OEM parts are the correct ones, they are only hurting themselves. Let's say for example that his last servicing was at a different dealer...it seems he would have been giving that other dealer his money just the same as buying parts from them, so what would the difference be to the new dealer? Either way the new dealer has earned or gotten his business...isn't that what they want?

I guess the lesson we can all take from your experience is this:
Get the best price you can find from whatever dealer and then see if your local dealer will match it or at least come close. This way you won't have to put up with their BS when it comes time to install it.

Yep, lesson learned...don't go to a dealer for installation of any after-market part(s) including BMW performance parts. If they are willing to do it you will pay up the wazzou. A local indy will do it at a fraction of the price. There must be a ton of BMW performance shops around your area. GL.
