Hagerty car insurance
Some of you must have older cars so may know the answer. My 1st BMW was 15 yrs old and I could immediately get "classic" car insurance from a company. $100 per $5000 of my declared value. My company was eventually bought out by Hagerty.
Over the last year or so I've been getting ads from Hagerty and offering free quotes for insurance. Now my 128 is only 13 years old but their quote was quite a bit more than what I pay from my new company (albeit have 4 cars insured]. My question is thus: at 15 years, does Hagerty insurance come down to the levels I mentioned previously ($100 per $5000)? It's not a super big issue b/c I winter store the car so that brings down the cost substantially. |

I've not had good experience on pricing with Haggerty. I owned a GT500 some years ago which I only drove 1,000 miles or so per year. Haggerty's quote was considerably more than I had from Geico and much more restrictive. At the time I was living in PA, so my current address of SoCal had nothing to do with the pricing.

I have them for a C3 Corvette and a SW20 MR2. They are reasonably priced for seldom driven classics. I think I pay about $700 a year for both of those. I’ve never tried to use them for my 128i. I would run a quote through their website to see if they’ll insure an E82. I know they refused to insure my MR2 for about a year or two until it was sufficiently “classic” in their view.

I just switched to Hagerty for my Cayman. I had a policy through Leland West. When I renewed last year I asked about taking it to the office which is five miles from my house, and a private underground garage.
Sure, just another $88 a year. So i did it, paid, and took it to the office last summer. I got the renewal a month ago, called to see where that rider was. Oh, that company doesnt offer that rider. We can put you in with another company.... But you have to decide soon, the policy expires in two days. WTF, you charged me for a rider that doesnt exist, then told me i had that coverage, then when i said show it to me because I am stupid.... I went on Hagerty's site and signed up for this year.

Talked to Hagerty after I got an online quote from them. Apparently the online quote doesn't mean anything. They were not interested in insuring the car. Too new, might be used occasionally to drive to work, might do the occasional HPDE day (1 per year). Any one of these disqualifies. Rate was OK but I was really looking for an agreed value policy to cover all the upgrades. Doesn't seem to exist in Ontario, Canada.

Uh, Grundy? I have a buddy who has 2 ancient American soft tops insured through them. He told me Hagerty wasn't even close. Similar coverage -- mileage, agreed value, etc. I'm about to add another vehicle to the fleet and need to get to this whole mess myself.

I'll second Grundy. I have my cars in Maine insured through them on an agreed value policy (actual underwriter is AIG Private Client Group). Both BMWs, the Land Rover and the Triumph. The price is reasonable-ish - bearing in mind, both BMWs are insured for WAY more than a standard policy would ever give in a total loss. Oddly, the Land Rover is the most expensive of them to insure, even though it's insured for half as much. Hoping to swap it to the classic car side this summer, now that it is 26 years old. Need to shine it up and send them pictures. Doesn't make THAT much difference in the long run though, I only actually insure them when I am in Maine, so about four months a year. Just comprehensive the rest of the year.

I have American collectors and have been very happy. You usually need to justify why the car is unique or special if newer.
I’ve never had an issue with insuring older mercedes, they did my 91 350SD (the newest model year I have) back in 2019 without question. I did have to give more justification about my 98 ZR2 when I had them insure it back in 2015 or so. They do have an allowable commuting and mileage tier plans. |
