My last tank - mpg
Well, since it's a slow day.
At 50/50 hwy/cty driving last week, I got 20.489 mpg. The 'puter says, I got 21.3. I find that I can easily get the computer to read 30mpg in strict highway driving, and like 15 in strict city driving. I am a bit disappointed, but whatever. My e46 328i got 24mpg in similar driving. |

How many miles do you have on the car? It should get better with time.
Mine gets 23.5MPG in town, I am pretty pleased about it

So as the engine is broken in, the MPG goes up...I am guessing the various systems get a chance to 'work better' after a certain point? Anyone have a scientific more objective explanation?

You have to remember that, the number presented does NOT apply to everyone's driving style.
I never got the stated mpg unti these two days when I force myself to drive like a real lady where I feather-foot step on the gas each time on a red light (so that it changes gear below 2k rpm) I got 28mpg on highway and 21mpg on local with normal traffic. (i.e. not bumper to bumper stuck)

Our E91 only has 800-ish on it and my wife does mostly slow in-town driving with a lot of traffic lights. She's getting 20.56 (calculated) / 21.37 (OBC) so far. Avg speed 29.7. Once it breaks in, a true test would be for me to run through a full tank on my usual commute and see what it gets - I would expect 1-2 less MPG with the x drive.

City driving average for me is about 11.2l/100kms using 100RON fuel with 5% ethanol. Mix of both D driving (read easy) and DS driving (read a bit faster when safe to do so).
The fuel is new so it may take 2 or 3 tankfuls to balance out but it really does depend on how hard you drive it and how many stop starts you make. The constant low gear changing drinks the fuel quickly.

basically if u stop a lot , then it does not matter whether you are a feather foot. each slow + speed up uses way more than 21mpg to do it...

I don't trust the onboard when it comes to average speed and consumption calculations. I haven't run the spreadsheet since my computer crashed.
The onboard would have me believe that I was doing 9.2l/100km on my last open road trip. To be fair I suspect that I was getting close to 650km on a tank. |

I am getting 18mpg. heavy foot doesn't help gas mileage.

I get at least 24 mpg with about 60% city driving and a heavy foot (I can’t help pushing it at full throttle during my lunch errands). Overall, I’m very impressed. You don’t usually expect this type of fuel economy from a 250hp+ car. That’s BMW engineering for ya.
