1M Brake Cooling Ducts

Following are some pix of the brake cooling ducts I added last winter to my 1M. Took quite a bit of dremel action, but a 3" hose just fits.

Not shown is the second hose that connects with a 3" aluminum coupler that I bought from Coleman Racing (http://www.colemanracing.com/Brake-H...Kit-P3531.aspx) that runs to the very nice carbon fiber backing plates I got from James Clay at Bimmerworld.

Did it myself. Hose is cheap and the couplers (not shown) were around $30 for the pair. All told, including a couple of cable ties, etc, probably $60 - $70.

Mostly labor, including a lot of work with a dremel.

Nicely done Neil! How do you get the air to the rotors? Is that via the backing plates?

Yes, quite right. And the cost estimate did not include the the backing plates, which IIRC was around $400.

This is great Neil! When I have some time, I think I'll try to do something similar. I'd imagine this adds a good deal of cooling at the track. What kind of pads are you running?

Yes, but let James Clay know that you'll be putting them on a 1M and Bimmerworld will make the necessary modifications.

I run Performance Friction -- generally PFC-01 or PFC-08 pads.

Nice work Neil! Not to get too off subject but what's your take on the 01's vs the 08's? My car is sitting in the garage waiting to go back to AMP this weekend and the 01's are insanely noisy when cold. Not kidding, when I come to a stop light it scares everyone and they look around for a freight train to plow through the intersection! I can't bare to drive it on the street with them but there's no point in changing them back to stock for just a week. I need to find a good compromise.

Neil,

Very nice work installing the cooling ducts. A few questions:

Were you seeing brake fade from high brake temps? So far I haven't seen this but I've only been running single 25 min sessions at the track w/ PFC-01's (soon to be PFC-06's).

How did you attach the hose to the front grill?

Have any rubbing issues with the 3" hose?

Are you disconnecting the duct section to the backing plate when not at the track?

BTW, there is a 2-1/2" hose option available too from Cantrell that might work better if clearance is an issue.

You know, with a weeks practice modulating the brakes you should be able to play a tune!

The brake ducts look good, MDORPHIN.

While probably not as effective as your setup, has anyone considered the F30 backing-plate retrofit? Details here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ighlight=brake

Oh, no practice needed. I should record it some time. I come to a stop light and brake normal. Squeeeeeeeeeel!!!! I lift a little thinking it will go away and the tone just changes and children for miles start crying, dogs start howling, and aware drivers start to look for a place to ditch their car. I brake a little harder and glass starts shattering. Once on track they are quiet and amazing after 1 hot lap but the rest of the time it's just unreal. The looks I get are hilarious.

This looks pretty cool but I don't think it would work as well in the 1M. I say this because the F30 (E90 too and I believe non-M E87) has built in air ducts that bring air from the bumper to the trailing edge of the undertray. Though not connected to the backing plates these ducts do direct air toward the brakes. The 1M has no such provision.

This does bring up the possibility of using the F30 backing plates and brake ducts through the undertray as Neil showed and leaving a gap as the factory does. Not as effective for track usage but very streetable.
