Car shaking, rough idle... helpppp
OK so heres the deal, for the past month this problem has been getting progressively worse, basically the car will drive fine for a little while then it will start to get a really jumpy feeling to it. The jumping will progressively get worse over a few minutes time and it will idle kinda rough when stopped. Sometimes it starting shuddering really bad and the service engine light will flash. Heres the thing tho, if i turn the car off and back on it will stop for like 10-15mintues before it starts over again. This problem has been with the car chipped and not chipped with both JB3 and JB4. For starters i have an 08 135 manual trans. Mods are JB4, DCI, full ******* exhaust, and im at 51k miles. So I was having this problem slightly @ 49k miles so i took the chip out and went in for service. They replaced 4 fuel injectors, hpfp, and low pressure fuel sensor. I got the car back and it still had the same issues. So i installed all new spark plugs and replaced coil packs 4 and 6 because when i ran the codes it shows the car misfiring those cylinders. Car seemed fine for a day and began having the same issue. I would like to try and fix the issue this weekend while i have time but need to get an idea of where to start. The car was shaking today so i unclipped each coil with the car running to see if any cylinder was noticebly not firing by the way the engine reacted. It did not seem as tho any coil was the culprit. I need some help as to where to look for the problem, i am posting the codes below. I am not sure if the shaking is causing the misfire or me unplugging the coils caused it. I can learn how to run a log file if that will help the figure out the problem.
Codes the JB4 found.... 2C32- Lambda probe in front of catalytic converter 2, trimming control 2C31- Lambda probe in front of catalytic converter, trimming control 2C6A- No Description found 29CE- Misfirings cylinder 2 29CC- Misfirings, several cylinders 0000- Failure location not implemented 29D1- Misfirings cylinder 5 29D2- Misfriings cylinder 6 2E18- Ignition cylineder 1 2E1A- Ignition cylinder 3 00F1- No description found 102C- No description found I have considered replacing the other 4 coil packs and/or buying new o2 sensors as possible fixes, but would like some idea if that may be the correct route to take. thanks for any help in advance! |

Multiple cylinders always indicates a fuel deprivation. It's odd they replaced almost all the major fuel components. When you dd the coil misfire test, nothing changed when you would unplug the coils? Not a bit?
I would say get the remaining two injextors checked out and the coils. Could also be O2 sensors out of whack that are throwing off your car. Log the car with jb4 to see how fuel pressure is.

they said they only replaced the 4 injectors which were covered under the recall, im not really sure how to test them out myself. im really leaning towards the o2 sensors since ive been catless for so long, but i wanna explore all options before i buy more and try things.
so in order to log on the jb4 i have to turn the car to map 5 correct? what all things should i put on the graph when running the log? is there any specific gear i should run it in or for a specific amount of time. i am not sure how much data is realistic to look at. |

my 08 used to shake back and forth when first started. It rocked like my old 77 Nova! Finially got them to replace the fuel pump and it went away.
Maybe you got a bad HPFP - many others seem to have had them replaced multiple times. |

Thats odd BMW told me when 3 or more injectors need to be replaced they have to replace all of them at once. Its their protocal. Sounds like an injector issue IMHO....

This happened to me and after 3 BS trips to the dealer, they finally replaced the HPFP.
Problem solved.

this problem was happening before i went in for my last service and continued after the service despite them replacing the fuel pump... they replaced every injector except for 2 and 6. i deleted the codes last night before i went to bed, i drove the car today to and from work for a total of about 40miles. it idled a little rough and had some mild shuddering but nothing like the other day... here are the codes that i had pop up today:
2C7E Lambda probe behind catalytic converter, trimming control 2C6A No description found 29D1 Misfirings, cylinder 5 2C31 Lambda probe in front of catalytic converter, trimming control 29CC Misfirings, several cylinders 0000 Failure location not implemented |

i have never had this problem any other time since ive owned the car, when my past fuel pumps went bad i just had long starts. i did notice when i went to get service the time before last they did a software update on my car and after that i always had a check engine light for my exhaust even with the dp fix installed. idk if that has anything to do with this but i threw it out there.

Just because you got a new (rebuilt) HPFP doesn't mean it is a good part. Reman parts are just that. And sometimes you get a bad one.
I would take your car back to the dealer. |

i understand that, i just wanted to see what people on here said before i take it back to the dealer. now that it is out of warranty idk how tough it will be to get the hpfp looked at without paying them to look at the car.

Since your HPFP was replaced under the recall... that part still has a parts warranty for up to two years (I think?). So... IF it IS the HPFP... you are covered under BMW parts warranty.

has anyone ever had their fuel pump go up without having a long start issue? for my last 3 fuel pumps i always had that problem arise first then performance issues, but that may just be me.

as soon as i starting reading this, it sounded a lot like coilpacks to me. i ran in to the same problem late last year. ended up being 2 coilpacks iirc. i'd say check out the remaining ones.
one thing i noticed was that if i stayed really really light on the gas, like barely accelerating, i could avoid initiating the vibrations. as soon as i laid in to it tho, shakeshakeshake CEL

O2 SENSORS.....this is a classic example of what happens when they fail......restart they work fine...and as the values get out of wack......shudder, shudder, shake.....failure light....

Well, it COULD Be O2 sensors. We also don't know how old some of these codes are. I'd recommend erasing and see what comes back up. But if you have money to throw around why not just try the o2 sensor fix out
