Schroth Harness

Anyone know when Schroth is going to make their harnesses for the 1-series?

I don't see how everyone is tracking their car without it. The [sport] seats are great, but there's no hold with the stock seatbelt (like in all cars).

Anyone know if the Rallye 4 Quick Fit for E46 will work on the 1 series?

quick fit and rallye belts are 2 different things. rallye belts bolt to the car at existing seatbelt mounting points, while quickfit belts buckle in to the OEM seatbelt buckles. quickfit belts are not available or the 1er, so use the rallye belts.

The Quick fits I saw on the E46 M3's in person had 1 part that buckled into the rear OEM seat belt, and then the other side had to be bolted in like the rallye belts so I'm figuring they might work...

Just be aware that there is a general movement to ban 4-pt setups in some clubs (PCA in particular). I don't think they make an exception for Schroth despite their anti-sub claims.

I'm inclined to agree after seeing a fellow driver break his kneecaps at a DE.

Looks like Schroth doesn't make anything for the 1-series.

the quickfits wont work, because the female belt buckles in a 1er are not the same as the one used in other BMWs, and the quickfit belts will not clip into this. the rallye belts are essentially the same thing (ignoring the optional camlock on the quickfits, which make them HANS compatible). rallye belts differ primarily in that they bolt to the body in the rear, instead of clipping into the rear seatbelt, and they bolt to the seat on the inboard lap connection, instead of clipping into that OEM buckle. the lap belts (and therefore the entire belt) stays attached at all times, except for the short detachable tether at the base of the shoulderbelts where they connect at the rear seat. they can be folded up in the footwell behind/under the front seats when not in use though. this is the correct application for the 1er.

this all comes with one caveat: the angle of the shoulder belts as they pass over your shoulders to the connection at the rear seat may be something to ask HMS about, as this is a car that could have your shoulder belts at a particularly steep angle.

my particular chapter, as well as other local clubs i've been with, allow and encourage the schroth belts with ASM. ask your local club's tech chair about it.

I am no expert, but I do agree with this as well. There was a long discussion about this on one of the lotus forums after a couple of incidents where people submarined with 4pts. The ASM (antisubmarine) which I installed in my lotus is a neat idea, but in reality ends up not much better than regular 3 pts and is certainly not tested (like the factory belts are). I use the stock belts now, but I do use a CG-Lock which at least locks the lapbelt which gives you most of the snug fit that harnesses do. I never felt secure in the 4pts. Maybe I fit them wrong, but no matter what I did, I found that I could still wiggle and submarine myself, I can only imagine what would happen in an impact.

my biggest worry about 5-6 pt harness is that there is zero protection for your neck unless you wear a HANS. So i personally would never do that without a HANS.

Once again, I am layperson, so I am just voicing an opinion for people to think about.
