active headrests

We are looking at adding another car to the family within the next few months and have pretty well settled on a '12 or '13 128i. Before I start to line things up, I wanted to verify with all of you that active head restraints come standard with any 1er that we look at. My wife has had a prior neck injury and a car that doesn't have some sort of active 'whiplash' protection won't be a good candidate for us. She's currently driving an E60 that does have this safety feature. I'm pretty certain that all E90s were phased in with this starting around 2009.

Thanks.

I see nothing in any of the parts diagrams that would indicate the head restraints are active in any way. That is, no mechanical leverage device between the back and the restraint...

Thanks for the responses. This is why I ask, I can't seem to find a concrete yes or no. I didn't see anything in any parts diagram either, but then when I look up info on the internet I read stuff like this (scroll down to the 'high safety standards' heading):

Interesting. I still can't really tell looking at the seat frame part drawing. I can say that the 1 series seat frame (all years) looks very similar to the F30 3 series. While, neither look as articulated as the seat frame for the 6 series.

Short of having long pins on the headrest, I can't see a mechanical relationship between the seat frame and the headrest that would push it forward on a rear end impact...

The mechanism is in the headrest itself. I see them on a regular basis where they've been deployed in rear end crashes. There is a 'repair kit' that BMW sells in the event that they deploy. I do appreciate the responses. If I can't get confirmation one way or the other I'll be shopping for an LCI E90 or E92, as I know for certain those cars have them.

Ahhh... Looking at the diagrams, I can see the difference now in the headrests. Besides the repair kit part being available for the E90 LCI, and not for the E82, the E90 headrest has an extra extension on the leftmost pin that is not present on the E82.

And, I can tell you with certainty that my 2012 E82 does NOT have that lead, as I've had my headrests out...

The repair kit 52109176091 cross reference does NOT show the E82.

Great, thanks Bill. I greatly appreciate the information. Looks like I'll be targeting a nice E90 or E92.

cheers,

Kyle
