comfort access - driver side door not working

Hey fellow 1addicts, I am experiencing a problem with my comfort access. I have researched and read through just about every CA thread there is but can't arrive at a conclusion on what's wrong with my car.

About 2-3 months ago my comfort access on my drivers door completely stopped working altogether. It won't lock or unlock my doors whatsoever or really have any connection. My passenger side door unlocks and locks with comfort access flawlessly and never skips a beat. My trunk supposedly has comfort access but wont unlock when I touch it unless my car is unlocked. I think it used to unlock when i touched the button when my car was locked when my driver door used to work, but i can't remember for sure. But I do know that my drivers side door is completely dead and never locks or unlocks at all.

About 3-4 weeks ago I was having problems with my windows where they randomly stopped working and wouldn't roll up. I fiddled around with the fuses and although none were blown, i replaced a few fuses for my window and now my windows roll up and down flawlessly and ive never had any problems other than the fact that my drivers side window rolls up slightly slower than my passenger one.

Around this time, I randomly decided to try my comfort access on my drivers door and it all the sudden worked! only worked for about 1 day and then it's been completely dead again and not responsive ever since.

Today I took my door apart and removed the handle, key cylinder, door panel and everything and traced the CA wires, from what i saw the wires were normal and no rips or tears in any areas from the handle all the way to the door jam.

My next guess is a blown fuse? does anyone know if there is a CA fuse only for the drivers side door? Maybe something is going on with my fuses since my drivers side window is a bit slower to roll up and down then my passenger side one?

any and all suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!

Random, but could the battery in the key need replacement?

Probably just needs a new outer door handle. Does the handle feel warmer than the other side? Are you having battery drain problems?

One more thought: the module could have gotten water on it?

This is apparently a semi-common thing. It's in the trunk on the passenger side, and if some very small/thin seals get old or crushed (because for example you had your rear bumper painted), water gets inside and fries the module.

This is what I suspect has happened to me. Had my rear bumper repainted in October, all was well until I went to pick the car up and now no comfort access. Had a couple of freak out episodes of the dash / instrument cluster and some codes complaining of no communication with the dash. Some google searches revealed very similar symptoms from others that had work done on the rear bumper.

Its been too cold for me to pull apart the trunk liner and check the module, but I fully expect to find it with water damage. Could be the cause for you as well.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

EDIT: I meant to say it's the passive GO module more so than the comfort access - but either way check all the modules.

its not the keys battery as the drivers side door CA works perfectly with the same key. Its also doesnt throw any codes and my battery is not having any draining problems. I have no idea what it could be

If you do this, make sure the car is asleep before disconnecting the battery. That means opening the trunk and waiting for over 25 minutes and keeping your comfort access key away from the car. You'll know it's asleep when the start engine button light goes out.

I found out the hard way chasing the same comfort access issue and fried my FRM module. Luckily this is covered under extended warranty, but it was a hassle.

Turned out my handle was bad. It was warm to the touch on the front end of it. Now I have to actually press the remote button to open the door like Fred Flintstone. At least it's a first world problem.

Hey I thought the Canadian cold comfort access package had heated door handles to warm your hand on cold mornings eh ! ?

I'm pretty sure that just heats the lock cylinder, not the front of the handle.

I am having the same problem. Everything works except the CA on the driver side. What would a new handle cost?

My passenger side CA stopped working a few weeks ago. The exterior handle was faulty & BMW Honolulu replaced it - fortunately under warranty. I don't remember what it cost them. I can check the price when I get home. It did take a while though, because they had to have it delivered from Germany to get the correct paint.

Just checked. They didn't list prices for anything, but the part number was 51-21-7-207-554. Most of the places I found online sell that part for around $240. Hope that helps!

Battery drain and Comfort Access

Hey I just purchased a 135i and am having this problem with the driver side door's comfort access not working all of the other comfort access features work beside this one. and I'm getting some battery drain as well. Is there a correlation between the two? Can I fix the handle without buying a completely new handle?

Most likely an internal short in the handle. Means replacing the handle.

I just bought just the handle in my color on ebay. The handle is used used across multiple models (E90, X5, etc). There are optional part numbers to check also.

For the drivers side RealOEM shows 51217207555, with 51217207533 as a alternate.

Are you sure about this?

I read on a few other posts that that aren't interchangeable.

Are you sure it's for the CA handles ?
