Just subscribing here - I'm at 1350 miles and I plan on doing my slightly-belated-1200-mile-service within a week or two, just gotta find some time to hop down to the shop. I'd love to do it myself but I don't have the space or the tools (plus I've heard the diff is a bit of a PITA without a proper drain plug).

Update: Scheduled my service for next week and was quoted $332 to get the oil, diff, and transmission fluids changed. Screw the dealership.

Edit: Guy at the shop just called me back saying that while they'd typically use Redline for the transmission fluid it might be a better idea to use the OEM fluid for now since I'm still under warranty and BMW will absolutely blame the fluid if I have any transmission problems under warranty.

There are no restrictions for transmission fluid (there is no "approved" list, like there is for engine oil). As long as you use the appropriate grade of transmission fluid, you can use Redline, Liqui Moly, BMW, etc. without concerns for warranty issues.

I shared your concerns. After talking w/ the guys at my local shop, we decided to stick w/ the BMW 5w30 engine oil and filter. As for the trans & diff, we decided to use comparable Redline fluids.

That was basically the premise I used when deciding what fluids to use for my 1,200 break-in service.

On a side note, here's my lab results from my engine oil after 1,200 miles. I am quite pleased w/ the summary and results from Blackstone and will use them again.

Blackstone is pretty kickass for the quick analysis and overview. It's nice to seem them becoming more and more mainstream.

+1

They even completed the analysis and emailed it to me the same day they received the sample. Talk about quick. That is kickass.

And on top of that, I received my next sample kit in the mail just a few days later.
