Just picked up this future classic 1M

Hello 1M addicts. I'm the new proud owner of an AW 1M #923 with a build date of 10/26/11. I believe this is a late build for the North American market. Currently has 16,175 on the odometer and I'm the second owner which is remarkable find of this future classic especially locally. Car is in pristine condition when I picked it up for such a low mileage and it already came with many tasteful aftermarket mods as well.

I've had multiple past M cars and the most recent one I sold was my Misano Blue M2CS that i had close to 3 years. I love the car and only had 3,400 miles when i sold but it was a DCT. Originally wanted a manual but all manuals were already spoken for at that time and had no choice than just take it. I also had an M3CS before it where that only came available as DCT as well.

Anyway, Here are some mod list as far as I can tell that came with the car. The awesome thing is that most mods were focused to improve braking and handling. I don't think the car has a tune but if you know who the previous owner was, i would like to reach out and chat more about the car.

- Brembo BBK 380f/380r (painted gray)
- Akrapovic Titanium catback with sound kit
- KW V3
- Ground Control camber plates
- Awron in dash gauge
- Unknown front and rear sway bars. They are color green
- Bridgestone RE71r tires
- OEM carbon mirror caps
- OEM carbon high kick spoiler
- OEM alcantara flat bottom steering wheel
- OEM 359 wheels painted in black
- Alcantara wrapped coin/cigarette cover
- PPF full front and side rockers
- Full window tint

I immediately put the car up on the lift and did a thorough cleaning on the wheel well and bottom of the car. Also added 15f/12r wheel spacers to have that flush look. Adding some dealer photo as well.

thanks .. had no idea about the blackline and side markers. Thought they were stock.

Haven't driven in the city but around town, the kw v3 is very compliant. AFAIK, the suspension set to the lowest comfortable setting. I had kw v3 as well in my E90 M3 and i just love everything about it.

Going to the smaller overall diameter gives a nice little gearing bump, too. I have 61k on mine, and running MHD stage 1+ (P3cars vent gauge shows it hitting 19-20psi max). it will easily tear loose shifting from 1-2, 2-3, and 4-3. I don't usually street race, but couldn't resist walking away from a Mustang GT that thought it wanted to play the other day.
that is a beautiful setup with those Apex VS-5RS wheels. It changed the whole look of the 1M into another level in an excellent way. I'm amaze you're able to squeeze in that much tire meat both front and rear.

I took the time to read your thread and there are some valuable knowledge in there in regards to fitment. Excellent read. Thanks for the link.

Got nothing but great positive feedback with Apex. Their wheel lineup just raises the bar that are cost effective and Liteweight. Apex reached out to me if i wanted my P car to be featured for a shoot on a set of VS-5RS. I certainly cannot turn that offer down as I was very curious what it would look mounted. Sharing this nice video they stitched up. After this, I put in an order for a set in motorsport gold.

I don't have enough seat time on the 1M to make that call from apples to apples experience. My 1M have some quite extensive suspension parts with the previous owner's intention to have it purposely mod strictly as a street/track car. It's dialed in with a lot of negative camber and mated with a 200 treadwear summer tire. My M2CS was stock with pilot super sport and I left it at that for 3 years until i sold it.

I will say that the biggest difference is the steering and power. I forgot how nice hydraulic steering feel was in an M car compared to the e-steering on new Ms. Been over 5 years since i had a hydraulic steering from the E90 M3. The steering felt a little heavy in the M2CS in sport mode (even more resistance in sport+) and definitely much faster in a straight line. This is all in a good way and each M car is engineered differently. I had no intention in selling the M2CS if it was a manual to begin with but i guess it all worked out in the end when someone offered more $ i couldn't refuse.

Both are fun cars and I'am happy I landed and even found one in such a pristine condition 1M and low miles. I really don't need all that silly power to go straight. The 1M so far seems to have that perfect balance and i finally can row some gears again.

Having owned a manual F80 before my 1M, I agree that the hydraulic steering feels better than the electric. The F80 was purchased new in 2016, and felt more composed overall. I prefer the raw nature of the 1M; with a tune, lightweight wheels, and a carbon driveshaft it feels faster than the unmodified F80 to me. I think BMW wanted to compete more with AMG/Porsche with F8x M cars, they are awesome daily drivers.

The F8x CS variant is the faster and better car stock over the base and even the comp. Just has so much tq and will continue to pull all through redline in any gear and it doesn't run out of breath. As the CS ring time suggest, it isn't something to sneeze about. I tracked my F8x M3CS and although it was fast, it would break traction very easily (MDM mode) and this was on a stock michelin super sport. It was overwhelmingly fun and had a hard time staying consistent lap after lap because of all that tq down low.

The 1M just feels like home to me and the hydraulic steering feel is just bonkers. Under 400whp I think is the sweet spot and just let it rip.

I installed a 15f/12r spacers on my stock 359M wheels with 255/35/19F and 275/35/19R RE71R and it rubs on full lock in the front and a slight rub on the right rear. Looks good but not recommended. Maybe stock tire sizes would clear. Going to try 12f/10r next. Don’t want to go under 10mm spacers since most doesn’t have the hubcentric lip.

Hi, not sure if this is relevant to you or if it may be useful.
BMW did do a fender liner update. Many 1M owners reported less rubbing or non at all with size 255 / 35/19 in front.

I'm not sure about the 400whp comment. This 1M clone with a single turbo and 500whp looks damn fun and controllable, and ran 1:52'S at Buttonwillow.

cool thanks for the link. I noticed the fender liner on mine has an M3 stamped in the fender liner.

oh no doubt. Anything can be made fast. That's some serious time laid down at buttonwillow. Usually, everyone just have a different meaning of fun.

I decided to remove the OEM wheels and spacers for now because of the massive rub during lock while I placed an order on a pair of 10mm spacer to arrive. Went ahead and mounted a set of LMs.

I was actually quite surprised they’re just as heavy as the OEM 359 wheels. Matter of fact, the OEM wheels felt a bit more heavier when I was swapping wheels. The struggle was real. lol

Here’s a pic of before (OEM 359 with 15f/12r spacers) and after LM mounted.

Love it. If it were me I’d powdercoat the oem rims to silver… but that’s me. PS4S’s on oem rims for regular street duty and super 200’s on the LM’s!

The wheels were recently refinished and painted (not powdercoated) black. I'm a big fan of the storm trooper or panda color combo and it actually looks a lot better in real life. Same goes to other cars as well. It's just hard to capture on camera.

If you ever want silver, Apex has replicas for about $1300, I do agree that black looks very good in person, rarely good in photos.

FYI...Since you have an Akrapovic cat-back, an N55 mid, Berk, MadDad, or Akra center-section will make a huge difference in sound.

Car looks great! Enjoy!

yes - this already came with the Akra center section as well. So it's the full exhaust system from the downpipe cats all the way back. In addition to the weight savings being titanium, it sounds so good at cold start and even when the valve is open. Didn't realize there were 4 cats originally. lol

as Ewok had suggested regarding the newly updated fender liner for the 1M due to rubbing issues at full lock on larger size tires and in my case, both front 275/30/19 tires were definitely rubbing. I didn’t waste any time and ordered and replaced them immediately. Thanks to this board for wealth of knowledge. I’m very pleased, grateful and happy I’m no longer rubbing at full lock.

Here’s some pix. Doesn’t take long to replace but I took the time to clean out all the nooks and crannies. Comparison between old v new, fender liner removed and new one installed. The last 2 photos of the tire shows a bit of clearance left at close to full lock and at full lock.
