hmmm...your mileage does seem well off. i got just a hair over 23MPG on my first tank...and am at around 25MPG on the second tank. i would say i do around 60% highway and am driving quite conservatively due to break-in. i hope to end up being around 25MPG combined once everything settles in and i am past break-in...with some spirited driving too.

Our 135 Vert still is not really broken in, but we average around 20-22 combined, but straight highway have gotten 27. Check your tire inflation, oil weight, air and fuel filter, and always drive with a tail wind! Also, the gas you use can make a difference, a small one, but still a difference.

85% higway
is giving me about 26 MPG, the OBC shows worse mileage, but the tried and true method of calculating actual miles over gallons used gives the 26 MPG figure (actually 9L/100K, but converts to 26 MPG). Currently have about 3000 K

Thanks for the additional data points, guys. Much appreciated. It seems that my numbers are indeed low. I'll check a couple things tomorrow, but I guess it's back to the dealer most likely.
Any more data points would be quite welcome! |

I picked up my 135i in Europe in May (Perf Ctr re-delivery next week) and after a week of several 100 MPH+ runs on the German autobahn, and driving up and down a lot of Austrian mountain back roads between Reutte and Salzburg, we had 24.1 MPG when we dropped it off at Vikase/Harms. (Had about 600 miles at the end of the trip. Probably 40%/60% stop&go/highway.)
That said, I don't think 17MPG is outrageously unexpected if 60% of your driving is in NoVA stop-go-stop-go-stop-stop-stop-go traffic. Agree that you should reset the OBC MPG meter when you fill up. Heck, keep track of the actual gallons you put in the tank, too, and calculate your MPG that way, too, if you're worried - and just to make sure it isn't the OBC that's wrong.) I'm sure you might have driven it, um, a little more 'aggressively' the first few days you had it. So that might be pulling down your 'lifetime' MPG average. |

2900 miles, 14.3mpg...all city driving. Have never reset the computer.
I had the same experience in my evo8, turbos eat gas. I don't know about all the bmw efficiency talk...i am sure if I had one of those x6Ms I would get about 3 miles to a gallon in it... |

I also found out today that my car was a "press" car, so it may have been beat on by journalists before I took ownership... which might explain some things. Yay. |

Around town with a lot of stop and go driving I usually average around 18 MPG. That has increased recently to just shy of 20 MPG. This may be due to my driving style, the summer gas blend or both. On the highway going 70-80 MPH I usually get 28 MPG.

I can get around 300 miles from full tank, so I am getting 300m/13.5g=22.2m/g
85%freeways. Never looked at my MPG indicator though.

I drove a lot this weekend on the highway (went to the National Aquarium in Baltimore on Saturday and to Luray Caverns yesterday--both are highly recommended if you live in the D.C./Baltimore areas). Unfortunately, I forgot to reset the MPG indicator on Saturday for that trip, but I did reset it yesterday. Including a couple blasts to 100mph+ and quick acceleration for passing a few cars, I averaged about 25.5 MPG on 90% highway driving. Not terrible, but I'm still thinking I'm a couple MPG down from the norm. I still haven't had the chance to inspect my air filter, so I'll do that this evening. I also notice a vibration at highway speeds in the seats, which leads me to believe one or both rear wheels is out of balance or something is bent. Ugh. Back to the dealer, I guess.

your 100 MPH blast will suck up the gas....but all cars are different. Some get less, average, or more that the window sticker.....your best mileage would come at 50-60 MPH....a lot of stop and go will hurt, all highway will help (no, not at 100). Doubt the dealer will do anything for you as far as improving the mileage.....Just amke sure your air filter is clean, and your tires are properly inflated....

135i 6sp vert, 80% city, 17-18 MPG... My '99 E36 M3 vert used to get around the same here in San Fran... I don't think this 300+ HP motor and chubby convertible body is gonna give the Prius any competition...

IIRC, brokenvert has mentioned >>30 MPG on highway runs when driven respectfully. Engine control logic often designs the system to run a bit rich under boost for protection purposes, so the more youre on it, the more fuel is used.
I found the 135 very easy to get moving with a light pedal. Shifting at 2000-2500 is also helpful Ive found in most any vehicle. |

Drive back from Performance Center in SC to Pittsburgh, up the Blue Ridge Parkway, up I-77, US-19 and I-79 = 27.35 MPG over 651 miles. And we touched 100 MPH a couple of times after leaving the Parkway and getting back on the interstates. (EDIT: The key was coasting in 6th on those downhill runs in West Virginia. And, I think, cruising in 6th at every opportunity when I wasn't getting on it. Car was a 135i with Steptronic.)

I have 6,000 miles on my 135i and my total average is 25 mpg. Driving is always split 60% highway/40% city driving.
Pure highway, I can get up to 30 mpg if I nurse it w/cruise control set at 75 mph. City mileage ranges from 20 mpg (with a light foot) down to 17 mpg (with a lead foot). All things considered, my WORST mileage is bang-on the EPA city estimate, whereas my average mileage is EPA's highway estimate. And my real-world highway estimate is 20% better than that! Hells yeah |

Pennsylvania has a lot of roads like that, but they are far better as you go into the mountains. The area just south of Erie is actually pretty flat. I've heard that U.S. 6 into north-central Pa. is a good one, too.

7k miles now, jb+/dci I'm getting around 19-20MPG pure city (gotta abuse 6th gear in the proper sections) and can get up to 29-30MPG pure highway. Mixed I've seen around 23-24MPG.
The mods actually improves my local driving experience as I don't need to push it as hard to get going from lights and going through gears feel wayy smoother. As everyone says, the car should've been this way stock.

My average for approx. 13, 500 miles is 22.6 mpg. I drive fairly aggressively sometimes, but my daily commute is mostly expressway driving at 65 mph. I would not be happy with the mileage the OP indicated above. This is my third new BMW and each one has gotten better mileage than the last; even the worst one (95' M3) got over 20 mpg. They have all been manual transmissions.
