PPK1 vs PPK2

Is it worth it to do the PPK2 over the PPK1 if I don't plan on doing any track time except maybe an autocross here an there?

Thanks.

Probably not worth it. In the past, you could purchase the PPK2 off ebay for under $1k. I bought the kit and installed it myself and had my dealer flash the new software for an extra $125. At that price point, it was worth it to me. If you're paying full retail and having BMW install the kit, you'll spend north of $3,000. That is ridiculously expensive for the added cooling. And if you find your temps get to high, for the difference in price you could get an ER oil cooler, a FMIC, and a BMS thermostat delete.

Excluding the fan, the extra HW in the PPK2 kit can be bought for about $600 - http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=707047

I don't know how much labor is involved.

Karl.

It takes quite a bit of time. Nothing really difficult, just time consuming. Need to remove bumper, relocate horns, unbolt the front clip to install the bracket to hold the auxiliary radiator, drain radiator, remove the tray above the engine to connect the new radiator hose near the firewall, refill radiator and prime the water pump and replace the bumper.

Just a quick note... One of the hoses (it's actually a black powder coated aluminum pipe) routes behind the fan and in front of the engine. The shroud on the OEM fan is actually wider than the shroud on the 850w fan. As a result, this aluminum pipe does not fit properly behind the OEM fan. You would need to bend the pipe to get it to fit behind the OEM fan.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up.

Do you think trimming the shroud is an option (instead of bending that pipe)?

Karl.

I have the PPK 1 and so far have not had any issues on the track. Granted the hottest it got last year on one of my track days was upper 80s. I do have an ETS FMIC and for the summer months run a 75% water to 25% coolant with a bottle of water wetter.

If I remember correct, the interference is right where one of the braces running to the fan motor sits. I just remember thinking, "Wow, there no way to trim this." The reason I know this is that the solenoid that triggers the PPK fan stopped working and I had go back to the OEM fan for a quick fix. When bending the pipe I said to myself, "If I snap this pipe I will have even bigger issues." My backup plan was going to be replacing the aluminum pipe with a flexible stainless steel hose. The aluminum pipe plugs into two rubber fittings on hoses sitting on either side of the fan, and it is attached with metal ear clamps. You could cut the ear clamps remove the pipe and insert a couple AN-8(?) barb fittings attached to the stainless steel hose.

Is ppk1 just the tune and ppk2 the tune plus the extra hardware like the fan, aux radiator cooler, etc? Trying to figure out what my 135is has.

Yes. That's correct. There is no difference in the software tune between the two. If you have a 135is, then you have the PPK2 installed.

As a side note, I forgot I had created this thread and ended up going with the PPK2.
