oil filter housing gasket [OFHG] replacement

Doing some reading and evidently changing the OFHG on a N52 is a 30 minute job when doing an oil change (Cam VanDer Horst - Bimmerlife August 4, 2018)

I did this last year and yes, it was very quick. I think it was something like 3 bolts to remove the housing! The N54 cars may have some turbo-related crap in the way. On the N52 you can get right to the bolts provided you have the right tools. I think they are e-torx bolt heads (I forget the size, but you can find it with a forum search).

On the twin turbo cars you have the extra work of doing a cooling system flush and bleed.

very simple on our N/A cars. It took me half hour, be careful to get rid of all old residue on the mating surface and tighten everything up. Otherwise, you should be fine. Some guy with an e90 328i on youtube helped a lot. Just search Oil filter housing gasket replacement and the one with the most views is probably it. Difficulty 2-3/10

Yup. 3 bolts and it's off. Nothing really needs to come out of the way except maybe the intake tract to give better clearance but even that's not necessary. A swivel/ratcheting wrench will make the one under the intake manifold easier to get to.

You dont have to bleed the system on these?

I was quoted close to 450 for this job. The leak has gotten a little worse since it started seeping last year.

After watching a few videos on the replacement, the tricky part is getting it all cleaned up and making sure the coolant does not mix with the oil. Is this accurate?

Thanks.

This post is in the 128 section, hence N52 and I believe all these cars (128) do not have the heat exchanger so no issue with with coolant.

Dont understand why you said the first part but good to know for the second part.

I'll have to do more research on the OFHG on the n52. Surprised why there is no DIY on this forum. Someone did a fantastic VC diy.

There's no need, it's a straight-forward job, and there are a few good DIY's on the E90 forums, as well as the repair guides on newtis.info

Interesting. I understood that the intake manifold had to come off to give access to one bolt, but apparently it can be worked around. Became a non-issue when I upgraded to a DISA manifold and had the OFHG done at the same time for virtually no labour charge.

so, 1/4" drive socket w/ straight 6" extension and swivel socket eTorx 8 mm?

How much coolant do you wind up losing?

I am about to run through this OFH gasket replacement on 128i, with next oil change

Thanks, all set - ordered gasket, swivel socket and extension, oil kit, from FCPEuro - ready to go

The video I watched
- he didn't even disconnect coolant hose, or torque bolts! I need to find a smaller torque wrench for this

Not sure about all the people who say not to worry about the coolant, when I did my OFHG I had a good bit of coolant come out even after I drained the radiator a bit. The upper radiator hose connects to the the oil filter housing and the gasket has a provision for sealing the coolant passage from the oil passages even on the N52 with no oil cooler.

It's very easy to drain the radiator enough to get the coolant level low enough to not cause any issues, about 0.5 gallon would do it. While you're at it, pull the mickey mouse coolant connector off and swap it for a metal version. Cheap insurance against the plastic failure, mine was extremely brittle when I swapped it at 85k miles.

Then when done, add back the 0.5 gal of coolant (or distilled water) and do the bleed procedure, it's extremely easy on these motors.

Good info, thanks - Do you have a p/n for the metal version of that coolant hose connector? Just drive down from Rock Hill and help me swap this thing out!

I used this Rein version when I did mine. FCP has it but you can get it on Amazon too if you need it faster. Actually, I've found I can get parts from Autohauz AZ in one business day if I really need something quick, I guess they have a warehouse near ATL.

I haven't found too many other owners from the forum in the area, we need to have a meet up or something!

I agree 100% with you.

When I did mine, I may not have drained the coolant enough or at all prior to removing the housing.if I did I guess not enough because when I finally got the dreaded third bolt behind under the IM off some coolant definitely spewed out of the housing, and possibly mixed with the oil and it was November and fairly cold out, and I did not feel like doing an oil change at 11 at night so I saved it for that weekend.

If anyone is going to embark on this, make sure you have good swivel adapters and a couple different extensions. My swivel was ebay junk, it didn't fail or anything like that, but the cube connector between the joints was more rectangular and so it did not want to turn very nicely when it's close to its max angle let's say.

It might be worth having swivel joint and wobble extensions. It's also worth mentioning that when you use the swivels and wobble extensions, you should torque a little bit more than the torque spec as I believe these adapters subtract from the torque being applied.

So I bought a 7$ hand pump before this job, and drained the expansion tank completely into a clean bottle. Pinch the coolant hoses to push any extra coolant out of hoses and into expansion tank. I didn't lose any coolant and no mess whatsoever. Afterward, I just poured the clean coolant back into the expansion tank and ran a bleed cycle (takes about 12 minutes). I took my time and changed oil, oil pressure switch, OFH gasket and 3 alu bolts, plus coolant flange replaced with aluminum version. Pretty simple, take your time.

Note: I did drain my oil the night before while engine was hot, and just let the engine cool overnight before the actual job
