Petition to drop front plate requirement
Turns out that there are 20 states in the U.S. that do not require front plates. There is a petition to encourage the state of California to do the same:
http://www.petitiononline.com/caplate/petition.html I've already done my duty and encourage others to do the same.

That will never happen. Too many communities are going the traffic light camera route and they need the front plate for the picture. Also, if you hadn't realized the plate is the most reflective part of the car, so cops can aim the laser right at the plate and get a nice strong return signal. Id guess it helps on radar too although its not so aimable.

I just read the petition, other than cost savings those are petty reasons. If anything they should try the "it blocks the radiator air flow and can cause the car to over heat"
That actually is true on one of my cars. |

Not gonna happen. Any cost savings associated with only prionting one plate will be more than offset by the lack of red light camera ticket revenue plus no front plate ticket revenue.

while we're on this topic, did your car come with holes in the front bumper for a front license plate? Mine did not.

I don't want holes in my front bumper, thanks thanks though, xbook.
It's not a good excuse, but if I ever do get a fix-it ticket for no front license plate, perhaps the cop will buy into it. I also prefer the way it looks without the front license plate. All of my previous cars didn't have front license plates, and I was never pulled over for it. My GF however, who has really bad luck with the police and driving in general, has gotten a ticket for no front plate.

I bought one of these:
http://www.skene.org/bmw/plate/ There's some drilling, but it's underneath rather than on the front. Personally, I don't like the offset plate look.

If anyone knows someone who works at a BMW dealership I think I can get a way around this front plate thing for all of us.
PM me if you have a contact in the parts dept. |

Y'know, honestly, I wouldn't worry about not having a front license plate until you get ticketed for it. My previous cars never had any front plates, and I was never ticketed. I believe it's only a $15 fix-it ticket, at which point you could find a temporary mounting solution, show it to a law enforcement office, pay your $15 fine, and then later remove it again.

No Holes Lic. Plate Bracket
I had purchased this for my MINI a couple years back. When I traded the MINI in for the 1er, I just unscrewed it from the MINI, let it sit in my garage 'til the new plates came, then screwed it onto the 1er. Direct swap.

Yeah, I wasn't worried about it until yesterday when I did get a ticket. It's $75 if you just pay it off and $10 if you fix it.
And I'm sure it depends on the cop signing off on it, but I don't think they like it if you just zip tie the thing on there. I'd really like to pick up one of those tow hook ones, but I can't seem to find a place that has them in stock.
