Neither. Launch Control is where the DCT feathers the clutch for you in a way that gets (arguably) the best acceleration possible. You go through a sequence of steps to start it, put it in sport mode, turn DSC to DTC, etc, then press down on the gas while holding the brakes; the engine will hold at some RPM (I think it's 4500, but on the E60 M5's SMG they cut it to like 1500 in the US vs 4500 in europe for some reason, so I dunno that for sure). Then when you let off the brake the transmission will feather the clutch, allowing for some wheelspin but not as much as if you dumped it, until you get going. I'm pretty sure it'll also upshift for you at redline, based on the Z4 DCT's owner's manual.

to the OP, congrats and its a very nice car.
to those who are contemplating DCT (or any dual clutch trans), my personal experience is that its very hard to tell during a short drive or test drive if you will like this type of transmission. you have to get extended seat time to be able to make an informed decision...unfortunately. |

No shift lights in the Tachometer
sorry unlike the M3 there are NO shift lights in the Tach.......agree completely with the comment that you need a lot of seat time to truly evaluate the DCT.......with 180 miles now, its growing on me even more........

Paddles........dont sweat it......car is so much more!!
Although at first I also disliked the silver trim on the paddles, now with a few days behind the wheel I really dont notice them at all.......not an issue....
this car is such unbeliveable value...........at price after dealer discount of about $41.3 including : DCT, M Sport, Premium, PDC, Satellite Radio and Harmon Kardon (which for any music fans is the best car stereo I have listed to in a while)........you have to consider that you are getting 90% of M3 performance at a 35% discount!!!!!!! |

That sucks. Hopefully they will do this right on the M1.

Sounds interesting. Are there any specific maintenance requirements for the DCT (e.g., recommended fluid change intervals, specific service requirements, etc.?)

unaware of extra maint. costs for DCT so I opted for 6 year 100K BMW maintanence so it wont be an issue.........so far even though I am only taking it up to 4k- 4.5k during break in (180 miles so far) there appears to be no turbo lag and you even hear the blipping of the throttle from exhaust on downshifts..........so far I am EXTREMELY happy with my choice of DCT over 6MT.......

will the car hold gear and bump against the redline or does it automatically shift to the next gear?
just curious --i find it infuriating that the VW DSG implementation in all of its cars (VW or Audi) will shift up no matter what. |
