Sounds indeed great, hope there was no tinkering around with the sound post-factum. Touchy throttle and quick rev up, very nice!

Help me understand

The video posted by skiddmark was not the production exhaust??? It sounded like a 335is (basically same engine) and convinced me.

According to this video, and some other who claim that press people say this was the car itself, this car has a different exhaust??

So we have three exhaust experiences:

1. Test pilot contest last year
2. Skiddmark video and BMW show case videos
3. Detroit auto show...

At the very least as time goes on the exhaust sound is getting progressively better.

I think the exhaust at Detroit wasn't the production version either. It was that strange welded looking thing, but hopefully hasn't to do anything with the sound. My only fear is, that the sound won't be as good as shown here.

The worst thing could happen is a great sound of an unfinished car and later on a tamed version, due to "legal" reasons or whatsoever. That would be pure marketing bullsh*t and therefore I really hope (and expect) that they can keep the promise that they're making here!

No doubt. The e36 wasn't a real m car either, but people sure love(d) it over the years.

So what qualifies then, according to you? Perhaps you could enlighten all of us...

Are the X5/X6 Ms not real either? Because the engines found there aren't "unique" ///M engines?

What are you going to do when the next M3 doesn't have a "unique" M engine? Will it be fake too? You should figure it out, because its coming...

True M car

An M car is what BMW sells as an M model. Some may not like the engine, performance, or looks or the fact that its an SUV, or think its not "pure" or "true" but it is BMW Engineering and Marketing that make the call.

If we don't like it we can buy another car.

+1 While everyone might have wanted this or that on the car, it amazes me the way people talk about this car...and only 12 people outside of BMW have had a chance to drive it...

This car is going to be so much better than my 2 135s...and I can't wait to see it in action.

Does anyone know if the shift knob lights up like the other M-cars? I'd love to be able to order an illuminated ZHP knob from the factory

Either that spec was wrong (but it was a BMW publication), or we are all getting it illuminated. Hoping the latter, all M cars in the last decade and then some have had illuminated knobs.

This is the first I've heard of any report of illuminated knob. Hey, I'll be happy to be proven wrong on this one

However, none of the press photos show illumination, and none of the standard literature I've read mentions it. Although they do reference it as the ZHP knob, which AFAIK is not lit.

Looking at Top Gear now, they state: "...and a gearlever knob with an illuminated shift pattern"

135 calipers are better but the rotors are a bit thin. If BMW built the 6pots around the motorsport rotors, then Booya.
