When to swap tires (RE-71s)?
So, after 6 track days with my RE-71s I noticed they were "stuttering" or "scrubbing" in the turns...a new sensation I hadn't experienced. So I decided it was time to "rotate" the fronts to put the meatier side to the outside. Pics below. Anyone have any other thoughts on when to do this?
Drivers side before the swap. Passenger side before the swap.

I run my tires backward and rotate up to the front when they're getting low on outside tread (square setup). Running them backward is fine in the dry.

The RE-71s are directional, not inside/outside, so no need to run backwards. but good to know.
This wear means I also need more camber. So M3 control arms for me this winter... |

Grip vs tire life...totally worth it to me thus far! Truth be told I could get a couple more track days in the original orientation...still a lot of rubber there...I just didn't like the scrubbing effect I was feeling.

OP: I have found that flipping tires after every couple of events will make everything more consistent, and make tires last MUCH longer. When I say flip, I mean dismounting the tire, and flipping the inside to the outside. Then your passenger tire becomes your driver side tire, and vice-versa. Rotating front to rear helps, but side to side does not really do anything, as your directional tire will be backwards (not a huge deal) but the outside edge is still the outside edge, and will continue to take the bulk of the abuse. Edit: I have mounted a few of the nexen tires, and not really heard that good of reviews, but GRM says they are quick. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/ar...-bfgoodrich-a/ |

Appreciate the discussion...it is good to have options and I'll definitely consider the Nexens when these finally wear out.

This is nexen's first (second actually) stab at the 200tw market. Sounds like they put a lot of work into it. The feedback I have gotten so far is they are great for autocross, suck on the track. Take it for what it is worth. Also, historically, nexen (All season and summer tires) fall apart regularly. Belts break and the tires get lumpy and get weird wear patterns. Just saying. |

Yes, the Nexen Sur4G is similar pace on sealed asphalt to RE71, and likely faster than the BFG in that specific situation. Everywhere else, and on track, they are garbage. Melt fast, wear fast, and not worth the cost savings on a per-run / day basis v the other two. Not quite as bad as the Kumho V720 was as far as delamination / destruction, but not good....

Just my $.02, I have the M3 front control arm bits and Ground Control street camber plates with 3.3* front camber and my tires look like your's just from auto-x, it seems that's just the way they wear.

A little more toe-out will increase inside wear to balance-out the increased outer shoulder wear during hard cornering. It also makes the car a little quicker to react to steering.
