135i Making Me Feel Sick

After driving my brand new 135i for 20-30 minutes, I and two of my fiends are continuing to become quite sick--from mild to fairly acute, perhaps depending on body weight. It even happened driving the car home from the dealer. The car is fresh off the boat from Germany. I've had it for three days.

Our symptoms include: disorientation, drowsiness, itchy, watery eyes, slight pressure headache, confusion, mild loss of equilibrium, irritability. These symptoms take 1-2 hours to wear off after leaving the car, and then start up again after some small amount of driving.

I was thinking it was vinyl fumes/off gassing, but since we have been driving with the windows and sunroof wide open and that doesn't seem to help, now I am wondering if there could be a CO leak somehow. None of us has any kind of experience of chemical sensitivity or whatever.

For me, I just get a little drowsy, quiet, cranky, and pressure-headed. The other two "test cases" are women just over 100 lbs, and they are getting much sicker. If not for them, I might not have noticed, at least not right away, so if anyone is noticing anything like this, it may be subtle depending on your size.

Anyone have any ideas or similar experiences?

You trolling for support in a lawsuit?

Talk to the dealer first - report the symptoms and see what they say. Coming to a message board for opinions won't help find the problem (if it exists). You need to get it back to the dealer .

That is kind of scary...there must be a problem if it is true...or the car is so fast that once you get out of the car everything feels verrrrry slow loll...my current car doesn't have a cat and that doesn't even get me feeling sick

Go get it checked out ASAP!!!!

I'm not sure whether the lawsuit thing was a joke, but that's totally not what I'm after. This is the best car I have ever driven, and I am just upset about these symptoms and wanting to identify them and get them fixed. Often this kind of thing is very hard to pin down, so I wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing anything similar to compare notes.

I just ran the car for 30 minutes with a home CO monitor in it and got a zero reading, so I guess it's not that.

When you drive, the wheels aren't moving the car but there rotating the Earth, could be throwing off your equilibrium. No seriously toxic fumes from manufacturing process need time to wear off. Drive with the windows down, air it out.

My WAG (wild ass guess) is that, since you mentioned the car is fresh off the boat and assembled just mere weeks prior, there might be some sort of chemical offgassing that's getting to you. "New car smell" and it's related cousin "new house smell" could very easily be dubbed "new chemical smell" by the more cynical among us. Usually when you buy a new car out of dealer inventory, it's had longer to "cool off" than your particular car.

Take two advil and call me in the morning

The best thing would be to take it to the dealer. Talk to the service guy and tell him that you and all your passengers feel sick after driving for a while and you think there could be a co2 leak or something going on. Maybe offer to take him for a 10min ride and see if he feels the same thing. Get him to feel it too so they know exactly what is up. Good luck and feel better!!

I believe you are sensitive to VOCs, volatile organic compounds, otherwise known as the new car smell. not all cars "smell" the same. yours is strong and is making you sic. it might go away eventually, but it is not good for you in any way to be taking those VOCs in for now. Talk to everyone and their boss at BMW to see what can be done.

P.S. It's not CO2.

I remember reading somewhere that the "new car smell" is actually toxic.

Probably just the new car smell, +1 for driving with the windows down for a bit.

However despite jokes about this, there is a more serious possibility. Although there is a very small chance, the possibility that something has come loose or was not tightened up correctly on the exhuast system and as a result you may have a leak into the cabin. This might be bordering on paranoia, but better safe than sorry to ask the dealer to check it out for you.

when i open the moon roof, for some reason i get the strongest and weirdest smell. stronger than everything closed. and even without doing that , everyone in the car comments on the new car smell. it is actually too much for my gf. myself, i don't mind the smell except with the moonroof open. i am a pretty light guy and i'm very sensitive to any kind of chemicals, and haven't felt any drowsiness, and i took my car on a 500 mile trip within the first few weeks of ownership.
