audio question (Audible Characteristics of BOV - so us mods don't move it ; -)
before the mods move my thread, this is a different kind of audio:biggrin:
so this will be my first performance car after my uberboosted Scion tC. I will be modifying the car modestly, but my main goal will to make it be something "special." isn't that what we all want? Im not looking for stealth, yet I don't want obnoxious. I already have the SSTT and BMW performance exhaust on order. I had a BOV in the tC, and loved it. I have read the BOV threads, and while I believe that it will not damage the engine, I do sit on the side of "doesn't really sound too BMW-like." My question is this... I will be getting the BMW performance intake when it comes out for the 135i. My limited knowledge of DVs/BPVs leads me to believe that if the intake was less restrictive, and boost was higher (which in my car, both will be true) that you would hear a small woosh when letting off throttle. Is this the case, or to I need to pony up $400 for a large whoosh that my be obnoxious? can i have my special sounding car?

I can barely hear the DVs when I let off the throttle with the stock OE intake (and my beginning to fail hearing). Maybe the Performance intake will be a little louder?

You can hear a BOV-like 'audio' with aftermarket downpipes. The woosh sound of DP's comes a little later after the throttle, but is more subtle and arguably more "acceptable" for a BMW. I figure it's the next best thing to a BOV as far as sound is concerned...although you do get a louder exhaust at the same time (and a bit of extra hp/tq), which could be a good or bad thing depending upon your tastes.

I was considering getting the Infinity Kappa series. Loud and clean.

My GTI uses a Diverter Valve system similar to the 135/335. The stock intake had baffles where you could barely hear the turbo at all. When I got an aftermarket intake, the turbo started making a whoosh at throttle lift, and you could hear the turbo spool when the boost came on. Its Not loud and high pitched like most BOVs, it sounds a lot lower pitched and longer.
Im sure in the 135s case, this would apply. |
