I would say it boils down to how the transmission is coupled to the engine. Automatics have been referred to as slush boxes in the past due to the torque converters used. It's the circulation of trans fluid into the torque converter which provides the transfer of power into the trans. Yes, I know torque converters also have a lock up mode which provides a directly coupling, but this isn't through out the operation of the movement of a car and only happens at a certain RPM.
The DCT still uses clutches as in any manual transmission. Granted it's a wet clutch system but still has friction pads. So any engagement of the trans is going to be a direct coupling. I think this part differentiates a DCT as a manual transmission which can automatically shift versus any of the newer designed automatics with a torque converter. |

The only reason I posted about this is that you're implying that there is a consensus that a DCT is a manual, and there isn't. For instance, Wikipedia lists ZF DCTs as automatics in this list. Not that I think Wikipedia is an authoritative source, but this demonstrates that there is not a commonly accepted category for DCTs. |

I have a DCT and if I want I can put it in auto mode and let it shift itself, or I can put it in manual mode and do my own shifting (my preferred way), so even though a DCT may technically be called a manual by some and an automatic by others it behaves like an automatic in its use to the driver, like most modern automatics with an auto mode and a manual mode where the driver can do the shifting using paddle shifters. Not like a traditional manual transmission where the driver pushes in a clutch with a third pedal to change gears. Also, there's no "auto mode" in a traditional manual.

Just hopping in to say unless there's 3 pedals (or clutch levers, like in F1, etc), it is an automatic. If you can put the car into "D" and have the transmission shift AUTOMATICALLY, it is not a manual.

^awesome! Any plans for amber markers in headlights?
I did a deep clean on my parent's E88 and applied a top coat of wax. Note: top pic is after and bottom pic is before

Hit 192k miles yesterday and ordered an Xtrons head unit this weekend. This week I'll be fiddling with my alignment (again), lowering the rear of the car just a touch, and tracking-down a strange clunk that's recently cropped-up. Maybe I'll get to install that head unit, too!
My main reasons for going with Xtrons is the CANBUS connection, the OE look, and the customizability with Android. CarPlay ability is the biggest bonus though.

Maybe I got the best of both? I got the M3 wheel with Tricolor stitching, but it does have the perforations where they should be at. After a couple days of driving, I'm in love with it. That guy really does great work!

What model did you go with and what setup does your car currently have? (Base, etc). Would you maybe think about writing up a DIY for this project? All I have left is Milvs for performance goodies. Then I plan to move on to suspension, appearance (New Front/Rear Bumper, and side skirts since I finally found them)....and I will need some smaller projects to fill in my time between all of that. Sorry for all the questions...but I have an addiction!!!

I planned my route to Pikes Peak. Being on E85 isn't really travel friendly but I think I'll be OK. Just stop a little more frequent, which I don't mind. I have one leg that is 260 miles and that one might get a little nail biting close. But I can stop and toss in a few gallons of 92 if need be.
I come out with about 890 miles one way. Leaving at night and gonna try to not get nabbed by the coppers. AAA don't fail me now. LOL? |

I tried installing it earlier tonight and got a large cloud of foul-smelling smoke from the unit. I ran it just 15 minutes earlier without a problem... I reached out to their customer service...if I don't hear back by tomorrow at noon, Amazon can deal with them. ^^Just to be clear, this is after disconnecting the car's battery...

Reason I asked about the DIY was I didn't know if you had to do any modification to the dash. I looked on the website for the E82 series, and they had 2 offerings.

Yesterday I noticed my AC isn’t blowing cold in my 135. Today I add a can to it and hopefully it takes and doesn’t quickly leak out. Just spent a nice bundle on getting the Vette trans rebuilt so I really don’t feel like spending another chunk on the 1 right now. Evaps seem to be the likely problem and that can run over a K. Recharge, please work.

DIY is pretty easy. Since I'll be starting-over, I'll take pictures and document the process. It's pretty simple, and I don't think that any dash modifications are required for the 1-series. You will have to trim a little bit of the climate control panel though. Quote:
I don't get why that happened, since the radio shouldn't be powering-up with the car, it should only power-up with the key being inserted. This will take some investigating on my end just to make sure my car wasn't the cause of the problem, and that no damage was done to my car as a result (other than a likely-blown fuse).

I didn't do anything, but she decided to show a car on a lift warning light and illuminated the brake light. Apparently that's a brake pad/fluid/sensor issue, so off to SpeedLogic it is. My brakes have felt soft for a while, I'm actually surprised it took this long.
Anyone have recommendations on a good street/performance pad?
