Adding ipod/usb to a car with only Aux

Hello, I am a new member here and just picked up my 2008 135i a few months ago. I got it used and it doesn't have the ipod/usb connection but only has an aux port.
I would like to be able to control the music on my iphone from the "BMW professional" headunit. My father has a 2008 mini cooper Clubman S with that feature and I love it.

I asked the dealer who I bought the car from if I could add the USB to my car and he said that it would be very expensive.
I would only want to do it with factory parts.

How can I get the capability to select songs from my iphone through my car's stereo like I can on the mini cooper that uses what I think is called the "Y-cable"?

Thanks!

How much would coding typically cost?

Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you with my '09. I have the OEM iPod adapter kit waiting to go in. Ordered it from United. It was kind of expensive, but once you see all the parts that come with it, you'll understand why.

Something I'm going to try to do - since my car didn't have the alarm installed, I'm going to install that as well and have the car coded for both at the same time. You also might check to see if there are updates out for your car as well...unless you don't want the update done of course.

I'm hoping to do an install video of the kit shortly. It's been a long month though.

I know it's not OEM but my '09 was the same way as yours, Here's what I got:

http://store.griffintechnology.com/bluetrip-aux

It plugs into your cig lighter under the armrest, then into your aux port, pair it up and it 10 seconds you're streaming bluetooth with no visible wires. I found a 20% off coupon code to get it for like 60 dollars. The sound quality is great and it works like a champ.

No, it just goes through the aux in so you control everything from your phone.

I see
I can do that with the cheap aux cable that I have now but I would love to be able to scroll through the playlists and select songs from the headunit like I do in the 2009 mini cooper S

So this Griffin device just serves to keep the Iphone unplugged from the AUX cable? Not sure I see the benefit, and i would think sound would be worse than a direct AUX plug-in. Am I missing something?

yeah, that's exactly it, the wired mess from the aux cable all over the center console looks like crap and this cleans it up nicely. I have quality sound, and not a single visible wire. Plus you can control the phone from everywhere and put the phone wherever you want.

My car didn't come with the iPod adapter either and so I retrofitted the BMW accessory iPod adapter. It mounts in the glovebox, which is nice because I just leave my iPod plugged in at all times, hidden away in the glovebox.

I can't remember at the moment, but I want to say that the dealer charged one hour of labor. I think I sourced the actual kit from Tischer.
