Advice on brakes

Hey guys,

I tried to distil the necessary info from other brake related topics but having some difficulties.

I wish to make my 1M a bit more track capable. Now it's stock except midpipes and toyo r1r tires (245-265) on stock 18" e92 M3 wheels. I live near a track which is auite brake heavy (Zolder, Belgium) and get brake fade after a few laps, plus this warped rotor feeling.

Could you guys recommend on an upgrade for occasional trackdays? I woulf prefer to stay on 18" rims. Maybe an upgrade to another OEM BMW kit?

Thanks for the info!

If it's occasional track days, upgrade brake fluid (Castrol SRF) and pads (PFC08). If a lot of track days, upgrade to front BBK.

What is the price point you are looking at? Lines, pads, and fluid should be fine for the occasional track day. However, Zolder is pretty heavy on the brakes, so I'd look at going full BBK. You'll find plenty of options to out their that will be suitable for your needs and are very close when you compare performance. When I was shopping around for brakes my greatest concern was pad selection and the ease of ability to get them rebuilt locally (which left me with stoptech, ap, brembo, and performance fiction).

No reasonable OEM options exist to my knowledge. The stock system with high temp brake fluid and track pads are extremely robust, so swapping pads for track events might simplify the inspection issues.

Lots of aftermarket options, Alcons, APRacing/Brembo's/StopTechs/RB etc.

No official BMW options for the 1M, but I guess you could get the M4 4pot brake caliper to work with a bigger disc 370mm (won't fit under 18s though).

Hoping to go to Zolder in July

Short of going to a BBK(many will fit under your OE 18" wheels), full set of PFC08(one of the most popular pads for the 1M and M3 track crowd) or RS29 along with a true two-piece full floating front rotors will keep keep your brakes more consistent from start to end. No more wrapped rotors as the full floating rotors will allow heat expansion(much better than the OEM two piece).

Have a look at these rotors:

If you don't have SS lines or high temp brake fluid, this is a good time to add them as well.

Thanks for all the advice!

OK, so I decided to go with a BBK, AP racing or Brembo GT. Is there a big performance difference between their 365(18") and 380(19") options?

Brembos have a tendency to be more limited with fitment issues. I don't know how fast or where you drive but I doubt that you'll find significant performance gains with the bigger vs smaller Brembo. Some people want the bigger one for bling but make sure your wheels will clear the caliper before you pull the trigger. I personally run the Essex AP front BBK CP5060 caliper. It cost me a left nut but sometimes you have to pay to play. Alternatively there is a relative cornucopia of used BBKs for sale over on m3post.

Check PFC out, I'd recommend calling them or Bimmerworld before you pull the trigger. Also add some brake ducting and cooling plates. (Z54 kit specifically)

With Brembo 380mm you are limited to 19" wheels and there is no significant performance gains with the larger rotor size. What you should look for is rotor and its vane design, more vanes the better. AP has one of the best rotors out there.

Caliper stiffness also comes into play and its finish. If you track a lot, you want to avoid painted calipers as they will change color after a couple of heat cycles.

All depends on how much you want to spend on a BBK. StopTech Trophy ST-40s on the front with race pads and PFC-08 pads on the rear OEM calipers are more than adequate.

Currently waiting on the Cantrell plates which are back ordered, however, Bimmerworld is currently making CF plates designed specifically for the 1M/M3 application when using the z54 calipers...about 2 months out

He is running the CP5060 caliper (front) which has been phased out by Essex/AP and replaced with AP’s Radi-Cal design (CP9660/9668).

I am about to pull the trigger on OEM size Frozen Rotors on all 4 corners, and will continue using PFC08 pads in the stock calipers for the track. I use Castrol SRF Fluid and have braided lines. I have plenty of braking authority on stock size rotors using sticky street tires (Bridgestone RE71r, BFG Rival S) but can't comment true R-compound tires.
