No heat shield under hood on my 2011 128i

I'm not sure where to post this, but since it is under the hood this seems like as good a place as any. I noticed a while back that there is no heat sheild on the underside of my 2011 128i hood, it's just bare metal and frankly steam comes off the top of my hood when it rains.

Anyway, my other BMW's have a soft heat shield on the underside which keeps the hood a lot cooler. I previously thought this was just something that BMW left off of the 1 series. However, I just saw a 135i that had it. Is the shield supposed to be on the 128i, or do they only put it on the 135i and other BMW models? If so, that's kind of lame. I'm trying to figure out if it was accidentally left off of mine during production. The extra heat can't be good for the paint on either side of the hood.

No insulation on mine, either, which I definitely think is odd.

My '08 128i has the heat shield. I believe it was dropped as of either the '09 or '10 model year.

Flip side is that if you have Navi, you have the better, upgraded unit.

nope 08 135 with no heat shield

I think there was a thread a while back about this and it was determined that it was random who got it and who didn't

My 09 doesn't have it and I think it is a good thing. More metal and surface area, more cooling :d

2011 135i, no under hood shield, and I wouldnt want it. Owned plenty of cars without it stock and its never been a problem. Just something more to fuck up, or take out.

Thanks for all the input folks! It definitley seems like it is a random thing. Some have it and some don't, but more don't than do. Not sure why the posters who said so wouldn't want it. It certainly can't hurt. Regarding some of the postings, I'm not sure what you could F... up or why you would want to remove it. My concern is more the effect on the hood paint over time. My hood gets really hot. Steam comes off it in the rain. That can't be good for the finish.

It looks better there, but I bet it was deleted to save money.

And on the 135, it might get effected by heat from the turbo[s], so they delete it, save money, and all cars get built equal.

My 11 135i doesnt have it.

I have it in my E30 318i and all my MB diesels have them.

On cars with a turbo or trap oxidizer real close to the hood, there is actually a metal foil pad on there too to reflect/spread the heat away.

The turbos, etc are too far from the hood to be a big issue, IMO.

Also, I think that these items were more necessary in the age of exposed engines. The plastic shrouds that are used now act as a barrier to heat as well as a bit of sound insulation, so less need to use something else.

Dont know how I feel about it not being there, but i did notice the same thing the other day...

I agree to this, as my wifes X3 currently have this shield and it is crumbling and dissolving, making a mess.

unbelievable... My E30 and even my 81 MB 240D have originals in good shape!

My 82 300CD is starting to crumble, and it does get messy... But an X3 should look like new.
