I am wondering with it being Shell if anyone feels it would be a better choice than the Mobil 1 0w40 LL01?? Any thoughts...anyone....Dackel??? We all know Shell is better than Castrol so I'm just curious.

I have not tried Shell. But I had used the American Mobil-1 0w40 LL1 european oil in my 135i for teh first three oil changes. I then started to read some good reports on German Castrol 0w40. So I tried some(since I do live in Germany, the Mobil-1 oil I bought in base). I was blown away on how much quieter the engine ran on cold start. Must less metallic noises. Plus my oil temp was almost two needle widths lower(cooler). So I was sold.

I am sticking with German Castrol.

Btw... I also change my oil every 5K kms.

But, like you said, in the US, German Castrol may not be the best choice due to the LL04 rating and the high sulfur in fuels here so I'm just trying to figure out what to go with over here.

I think as long as you go with a short OCI - whether the oil has a LL1 or LL4 ratingis a moot point. But thats just my opinion. That kind of stuff is better for Bob the oil guy's Blog to ask of.

"German" Castrol, that being the 0W-40 weight oil now is LL-01 approved, not LL-04. Belgian Castrol, now 0W-30, is also LL-01 rated, not LL-04 rated. (US versions in both cases)

Not sure where you're seeing that either of these oils are LL-04 rated. Or are you talking about the versions of these oils bought/sold in Germany?

I was referring to the German Castrol Dackel is using and many purchase over the Internet. As you will probably see, I asked the question that you kind of just answered on my other oil change interval thread. I made this statement/question before I noticed that Castrol now has this ll01 option at Walmart and any other auto parts store. I am almost positive the last time I saw that Castrol Euro Formula oil, it was NOT ll01...that is a newer situation I think....AND what do you think would be a better choice then, the German 0w40 or Belgian 0w30?

It was about a year and half ago that Castrol changed their oil ratings.

I use to use Castrol RS Edge 0w40, it was LL4 rated. Then Castrol stopped making that oil. Its been replaced by Castrol Edge FST(Fluid Strength Technology) 0w40 which is LL1 rated.

I always change my oil every 6K kms, so I think the LL rating is kind of a moot point. I use the 0w40 grade bc it covers a wider temperature range. So that is what I would recommend you to use.

I would go with the 0W-40 grade. Though the 0W-30 has always been a "heavy" 30 weight.

Thought I might make a 2017 update, since I was at the store looking for oil for my BMW and MB, and this thread came up in my research.

German Castrol (GC) appears to be known simply as Castrol EDGE now (same name as the normal US version). BUT it is still the same European formula. Made in Germany, LL-01 approved (also meets MB 229.5, for those who are curious). I found a 1 qt bottle for $8 at my local Wally World, in 0W-40, which appears to be the more common grade these days on our side of the pond?

Also, Mobil-1 0W-40 European Formula has lost its LL-01 rating as of a couple years ago, although it still retains the MB/Audi/Porsche approvals.

For the curious, go read up on BITOG. There are pages and pages of stuff there.

TLDR: GC is now known as Castrol EDGE but look for the "Made in Germany" and "LL-01 " approval. M1 0W-40 is NOT LL-01 approved, but probably still the same stuff maybe.

Locally, Walmart sells 5 quart jugs of LL-01 Castrol Edge 0W-40 for $27, sometimes as low as $23 on sale.

Lucky, I've never seen 5 qt GC in my neck of the woods. The Mobil-1 Euro formula here goes for $26 normally, $22 on sale. Maybe it's a regional thing.

Not trying to get into semantics because the nuances of BITOG are largely lost on my dinosaur brain but for historical purposes "GC"/German Castrol is the LL-01 0W-30 stuff that was made in Germany. It has had a unicorn-tears rabid cult-like tribologist following and even has its own FAQ on BITOG:
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...&Number=718643

Then at some point some people noticed the print on the 0W-30 bottles changed from "Made in Germany" --> "Made in Belgium" which prompted all sorts of conspiracy theories and virgin oil analyses. Around this same time the 0W-40 stuff comes out with LL-01 approval and "Made in Germany" on the bottle.

I used to pick up the old GC @ the local Pepboys but I don't even see it on their website anymore. Looks like advanceauto still has it.

I haven't actually run the "new" GC 0W-40 yet but I suspect it will be same as all the other LL-01 oils: i.e. completely fine based on routine UOAs (including M1 0W-40 LL-01, Motul x-cess 5W-40, BMW 5W-30, GC 0W-30.) And the fact that it's available for cheap in quantity at Wallyworld is a bonus (although I suspect other people have picked up on this because the shelf is always empty.) You can also get it for the equivalent price on Amazon (currently $26 - I've seen as low as $20.)

You mean 6.9 quarts, or 6.5 L.
