In the US that could be your first call actually, BMW Assist will call the police for you.

The Police have got to have some leads by now. I mean, come on... 400 stolen vehicles in one region alone? I hope they're trying to figure out where all the BMW keys are coming from. If the gang is stupid enough they'd be buying them in bulk from wrecking yards within UK.
OP, sorry to hear. When will you know from your insurance company if they will give you a pay out? |

I found an interesting tracking solution here in Sweden. Used a lot for boats and boat engines. (get stolen a lot over here) Its a small box that have both GPRS and GPS.
http://www.axtech.se/en/ Any suggestions on where to mount it so the GPS signal would work but still hiding the device? It don't penetrate metal. The box is very small (76*62*28 mm). |

As for the insurance company, there's no reason why they wont pay out. Im guessing the usual 4-6 weeks before they do. Luckily I had GAP insurance so I get the full value back. I want them caught but don't want the car back after they've been driving it. My guess is its in storage locally to see if there's a tracker, and after a couple of days they'll move it abroad. |

Sorry for your loss OP.
It truly sucks to have a limited edition car such as the 1M, stolen. If they do retrieve it, I'd get it fixed and love it all over again. I'm sure we all differ on that point, but these are rare vehicles. Just because it was stolen doesn't mean it can't be or won't be wonderful again. Whatever is/was broken will get fixed and she'll be good as rain all over again. Have you called BMW assist? That may have worked that night. But, by this time they may disabled that system, or reprogrammed it's function. Thieves are arseholes, but they can be some smart and crafty arseholes. BTW, those of you who want to blame BMW, come on, really? NO manufacturer can or should be held responsible for the theft of a car they built. It's not possible for every car made to be made 100% theft proof. When you build a better lock, someone will figure out a better way to break it. That's the nature of thievery, they want it, they'll figure out how. I don't see any court in the US or UK that would hold the manufacturer liable for theft. Also, being a limited production car it's very unlikely that these 1M's will be chopped or used for parts. There isn't a big market for 1M used parts. It's likely going to some country where there is a demand for them. On the other hand, there are plenty of 135i's in the world, and many parts from the 1M will fit, including the special M bits. Sucks, no matter what. |

This device should be fitted to all BMW's with an extra trip switch on the OBD cover.

Not without setting the alarm of they won't which is kind of the issue here, right?

Really sorry to hear about this theft, hope you get insurance money and premiums don't become prohibitive 1MSept11. BMW really need to work on a software recall if this is becoming as easy as this. |

I agree. I'll be looking at this soon...
Although, ya know...tint would have a slight deterrent factor as well (I would imagine). It definitely makes things messy when trying to break through glass. Car's get broken into around here all the time, but I've noticed...it's hardly ever a car with tint. |
