Alpine tour 2014... Sella 1.0 August 29th/30th/31st...
UPDATE: We will be touring
the Sella Pass area not Stelvio this year. Go to page TWO of this thread for more info. ************************************************* Stelvio 3.0 ? August 29th/30th/31st... I'd like to start planning out of Alpine tour for this year. I know some of you guys expressed an interest in going to another place(Pass) besides Stelvio. But the more I think about it... I really like the idea of using Francesca's Post Hotel as a Base for the weekend of our tour. And I know we will have some "newbies" joining in on the fun this year. So I'd like to hear what everyone thinks. ? Here is what I am thinking... we meet on a Friday afternoon in Trafoi(BZ, Italy). This is at the base of the Stelvio mountain pass. Saturday and Sunday we will head out on some mountain passes. I'd like to do the Rambo Pass(Near Solden, Austria). I also want to hit up the Sella Pass in the Bozen area. Maybe we could also do some Swiss Passes before or after our main event on the weekend. I know some of us will want to get in as many passes as possible. So lets discuss what everyone wants/thinks/needs out of an Alpine Tour. Also... WHAT time of the year should we go? I was thinking late June to late July. Does anyone have a Preference? Grimsel Pass Furka Pass St. Gotthard Pass San Bernardino Pass Fluela Pass Ofen Pass Umbrail Pass Stelvio Pass Gavia Pass (this one was too dam scary to do again!) Nockalmstrasse Gerlos Alpenstrasse Dack

August or September works better for me than July. But I'm all in for this. FYI I know the passes in the Bernese Oberland like the back of my hand if we ever decide to head that way. Now that's some spectacular driving as well.

And good luck on that my friend. Unless you manage to get the roads closed for those two wheelers. And btw still ok that K-town is the starting point for the pre run days? Last edited by Grey Dove; 05-08-2014 at 08:49 AM.. Reason: slow working braincells |

Yes, I think K-town would be a good starting point for all of us to meet up at. We could even maybe go on Base to the "Flying Pig" BBQ joint downstairs in the officer's club.

Ok... I HAVE a date for our Alpine tour!
Ok, Guys,
I have a date for our Alpine/Stelvio 3.0 tour. The first weekend in August. That's August 1st(Friday), 2nd and 3rd(Sat & Sunday). I talked to Francesca today... they still have lots of snow on top of Stelvio. The Pass is not even open yet. She said in two weeks they have this HUGE Giro bicycle race and she said she doesn't even think the cyclist will be able to do the entire race like they have done in past years. So... the plan is for all of us to meet in Trafoi, Italy (Stelvio) Friday afternoon/evening August 1st. We stay the night and the next day we drive over the Pass. Then we drive further to Sella Pass over near Trento. I will be planning more of the specifics with @Artemis At this point I don't know IF we should stay two nights in Stelvio or just one night. It just depends on what the group wants. Dackel

Sella 1.0
I just want to say it's ALL @Artemis 's fault! A few days ago, I had some free time and I decided to drive down to Passo Sella and scout out some locals. I found us a very nice hotel, the Bella Vista. I will be posting some info soon for booking it. Anyways... we will be in the heart of the Sella mountain range - its an awesome area! I decided not to go to Stelvio this year. I think we would be wasting so much time driving from one to the other. Instead lets use the Bella Vista hotel as our base of operations and we can drive the MANY mountain passes that weekend. The date is still August 29th/30th and 31st. The plan is to meet at the hotel on Friday afternoon. Do a short (~1.5 hour drive) and then go back to the hotel for the evening. Then drive some more passes the next day. Stay tuned for more info soon. Dackel
