Servicing Question

Hello chaps. My 1M is due its first proper service, and I want to clarify exactly what it entails before I contact a dealer and book it in.

The car was registered in June 2011 and has done a little over 7000 miles, but the two year interval is up. (Two years since the running-in service)

I'm assuming this two year service is simply an oil and filter change?

By the way, I imagine that the schedules are not the same the World over. Mine is a UK car, and as far as I am aware, 20,000 miles or two years is correct here? Certainly the car seems to think so.

Many thanks for any help or advice. Incidentally, as an aside, can anyone recommend a good dealer for servicing a 1M in Bedfordshire or the surrounding areas? I'm willing to travel to avoid my car being filled with incorrect fluids and being washed with a gritty sponge

new wiper blades
new (cabin)pollen micro filter
change brake fluid

Btw... you did have the break in service done at 1,200 miles right? Oil & filter, trans and diff fluids changed. ?

Thanks for the info. I'm the second owner of the car. The car did have a running-in service after six months and 1000 miles. But, having checked the service book again to confirm, only the 'engine oil' box is ticked. However, there aren't any boxes available to be ticked for transmission and diff, so I have no real way of knowing.

I should perhaps contact the servicing dealer and check what was done. Although who knows how accurate or honest the response will be.

Book in with Paul Travers at Specialist Cars BMW in Stevenage, he is the master technician and a real M enthusiast who race a M3 in the BMW Kuhmo Cup.

Hopefully they'll also be able to check the system and see exactly what was done. if there's any doubt, I shall have the trans and diff fluid changed on top of the regular service.

Specifically ask to be booked in with Paul at the time of booking in, ask to have a chat with him when you arrive, he usually does anyway and speak to him about your possible concerns re diff oil etc. Really good and trust worthy bloke who knows his M's......

Ive just phoned them and booked it in

Apparently its unlikely that Paul will carry out the work, but it's no problem to speak with him when I arrive, just in case there are any question marks over the fluids.

In any case, the car has a service pack attached to it, which is a brucy bonus. I'll call the dealer that did the running-in service and confirm or disconfirm the fluids status. Although apparently Stevenage will know when they do a key read, so I may just speak to this Paul guy on the day. perhaps even have the trans and diff oils changed anyway (possibly even at my own expense). Can't do any harm.

I just had mine done a few months ago too. I had some issues with getting the correct details and price, but as you have the free service pack, no issues to your wallet

If you need to read the issues I initially had just search my posts on here for what I was quoted work wise.

I used Specialist Cars Tring as they are 1 min down the road from me.

Excellent. Good to know. Not much worse when you own a 'special' car and taking it a regular mainstream dealer and having them potentially fill it up with chip oil.

As well as the oil and filters BMW also changed the spark plugs on my first service.

Not sure if it was due to mileage but my car had approx 17k miles and was 19 months old at the time!

Had my car done on express service while you wait today at John Clark,can't complain about the service,all good,right onto the job when I dropped the car,had it for 2 hours,done a security upgrade as well which I wasn't aware of,just to go back to get some new arch liners,don't have the service pack though,so I had to haggle the price down with the service advisor,they do try it on

motor mechanic myself to,pretty sick paying them prices today

Not sure what miles the plugs are good for? Most plugs are good for 40k+ nowadays.Bmw was going to replace them on my service today,car has done 5000 miles,then told me there two years old and it will be a small fortune,seem to go over the score selling you bits,the advisor I had was realistic and didn't rip me off in the end,if it ain't broke don't fix it

Spark plugs on the 1M should be replaced at the 30K mile mark, I believe. I think I read somewhere every third (bmw) oil change they get replaced(counting the first breakin service).

On a 135i they are good for 45K miles. But everyone with a tune replaces them at ~20K miles or so.

I know a fellow 1M owner that had his plugs changed at around 21k miles and 15 months old on the first service. There doesn't seem to be any consistency. I have the service pack so it didn't cost me anything

Spark plugs being replaced on the 1st service is not correct. This is the pain and discussions I went through. Hunt out my post on the same issue.

IF you have the free service pack though, no issues, you are not paying for the work or parts. However if you are paying, then per guidance, BMW do not require spark plugs at the first/2yr service. It is at the 2nd service spark plugs need changing on the 1M.

Yup had my service today, oil, oil filter, micro filter and spark plugs. Didn't argue as with the service pack.

I did get a free light scratch included with the wash but they polished it out...

Thanks again to Aussie_in_London for his recommendation of Specialist Cars Stevenage. Very pleasant experience, and Paul is indeed a really nice bloke and extremely enthusiastic. I really felt that my car was in good hands with these guys, and they will most certainly be servicing and looking after my 1M for as long as I own it.

Regarding spark plugs, I saw for myself that they were listed on the computer screen when the service lady read my key. Whether or not it's correct, I don't really care, as it was free anyway.

As for my car's transmission and diff oil being changed at the running-in service, we have yet to confirm, as I've been a bit tardy in contacting the original servicing dealer, and it wasn't possible to see by reading the key. I shall contact them next week. In any case though, Paul has put my mind at ease and implied that it's really nothing too much to worry over with the modern M-cars.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the whole dealership, and knowing that guys like Paul Travers are on hand for that friendly one-to-one chat is a huge bonus. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a great servicing dealer in and around the Stevenage area. Oh and I also had a ride in the i3 whilst waiting for my car. Very impressive machine and pretty punchy!

So my car is now rapidly approaching its third birthday, and the service message has popped up. Obviously I shall be booking it in with Specialist Cars again. Both for the service and its first MOT.

I'm a little confused by the service status in the iDrive, though. It's only showing a need for brake fluid change, and vehicle inspection. Does this sound correct to you guys? I was kinda expecting a rather major service at three years. It has only done 3000 miles since the last service in November. I suppose I just go with whatever the car/BMW say needs doing?

I've also been contacted by BMW about extended warranties. Is it recommended to buy one? I rarely use the car hard, and it has never been on track, so I'm confident it's not gonna fall apart as soon as the warranty expires...
