I painted the grills black on my old 2003 530i. After a month they were all chipped up from highway driving.
My opinion..... Get the performance grills!

The only bad thing with painting chrome is chipping like stated above... But if you don't mind repainting then go for it! I would maybe try a clear protectant?

Jeez - Performance grills cost, what, all of $90? I mean, if you're just the type to try and DIY absolutley everything, I get that - but if it's a money thing, come on. $90 is nothing. Plus, time is money, and I for one don't want to waste it with sanding and application of multiple coats of spray paint. Also, too easy to overspray or end up with orange peel or other imperfections.
Anyway, the Performance pieces are perfectly color-matched to the shadowline trim, something you're never gonna get by spray painting in your driveway. OEM fit and finish is easily worth the $90 to me. Not having to mess with paint is a bonus. |

Nice work! I just did mine yesterday too. I painted mine flat black to match the intakes on the lower fascia. Came out incredible. I used a primer made for plastic, and then a flat black paint made for plastic. Paint was probably $10, and it took about 2 hours to do (mostly paint dry time). Saved myself $80.

I wish there was an option to block any and all images of euro-spec 135i's. I get stupidly jealous when I see how awesome the headlights look without the farking ugly ass amber lenses in the US models. Cool looking homemade grills BTW. LOL
