1M to 335is?

Here is my dilemma...
The 1M is an incredible ride. But because I'm a ninny, I don't drive it when there is salt on the roads, the weather is bad (rain, etc), or the weather might turn bad. That leaves like 8 days a year to drive it here in Chicago Ok, kidding - sort of (I put 1,200 miles on the car in the last year).
I'm also paranoid about the car. I realize it is "just a car" but every time I get in it I worry that if I wreck it, the insurance company is not going to be able to get me a new one.
So it sits in my garage.
I will say that when I do drive it, I love the torque, I love the sound, I love the way the car "feels". Except I'm one of the few who simply can't stand the fact that it does not have a sunroof. Drives me nuts.
Enter the 335is...
While I could get a used one, I probably would order one. It would have the color I want (Blue!) as well as the options I want (yea, I'm an active steering kind of guy - if you lived where I do, you would understand). The price would probably be zero out of pocket right now as well (the 335is would begin its immediate drop in value, whereas the 1M will probably hold its value much better).
However, I could drive it. I could drive it in the rain and heck, even today when it is 30 degrees out and there is salt on the streets.
How crazy am I to be considering this?

You're not alone! But all the 1M does have is all I ever wanted from a car and there really is NO other car that comes close to how great of a package it is.

On the crazy scale, you're not not in the danger zone from my pov; If you're only considering the 335is coupe model: keep the 1M an learn to idolize it less and use it more, if you have some benefit from the 4 door 335i version: go for it!

Honestly I would just go with a new F30 328i to daily, only about $450 per month lease fully loaded. Then keep the 1M for weekends. The F30 328i is also a fantastic car and has a turbo so you can tune it and etc.

Seriously? I have 18k miles on mine and I drive it year round in Chicago. I say keep it....

By the way, I have a commercial grade can opener for that roof of yours. Surely there's a DIY around here somewhere.

As for the fear of wrecking thats a silly argument if I'm being honest. You got the car because its a blast to drive, so go and drive it, enjoy it. Stuff happens, its out of your hands! 335is is a great all around car but it doesn't excite on nearly the same level. I won't give up driving pleasure for a sunroof.. and I really love a good sun roof

Don't be afraid to drive it because its limited production or insurance complications... the car is FULLY capable of handling well in wet weather and with proper tires even moderate snow. The only reason to not drive it would be if it was not capable of handling such conditions. Cars like the ZR1 on cold tires in winter for example is a problem waiting to happen... the 1M is not, not at all. As for salt on the roads you won't damage the paint finish, modern BMW clearcoats are very resilient. Keep it well waxed and wash it regularly , blast the undercarriage with a pressure washer and just drive the thing.

Why don't you drive your X6 more and save 1M for better weather, road conditions..

I think most of us feel the same. I had a Sedona red 135i leased that over lapped with the 1M. Was great car. But doesn't move much in snow. When I returned it I felt I need a nice daily driver and also thought of the 135is. I test drove a few cars (M3 etc.) and they all feel so numb and heavy compared to1M. So I thought maybe wait for M235xi.

Actually, that's an easy one: get rid of your wreck1Mophobia: drive your 1M in good health. Consider adverse weather circumstances as an opportunity for (cautiously) improving your driving skills, not as a hazard preventing you from driving.

Additional benefits: your money stays inside your pockets and future regrets can't enter these. Don't restrain yourself from having fun. And if you're yearning for a blue exterior color, get a blue wrap.

You gotta move to groove. Don't miss out on fun that's at arm's length.

IMO if you do it for reasons that you posted you will regret it and that regret won't have a rear gear because you won't turn back and try to find a used 1M after owning a brand new one and letting it go.

My advice: arrange yourself a road trip, a few days or a week off, some free time with the car to a destination that you love or always wanted to go, this could cure your low mileage/fear of driving problem.

I recently drove my 1M from Minneapolis to Dallas nonstop and it rained most of the trip. First time my 1M has seen anything other than clear skies and dry roads.

You know what? I realized I missed out on a lot of fun this past year.

You're in a good position because you really have nothing to lose. Drive your car in the rain and snow. You'll probably find yourself loving your 1M even more than you have so far and you'll have so much fun. It will be so much better once you log more miles and the worries go away and you can enjoy it like it was meant to be enjoyed.

And it that doesn't happen for whatever reason, you can just get the 335is and you won't need to worry about having put miles on the 1M or having driven in the rain because it won't be your car anymore! I'm sure you'll continue to take great care of the car and will only see modest odometer gains while you try out the "just drive it" approach, so it's not like you're going to hurt it's resale value.

Sounds like a win-win to me! Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be happy as long as you're driving.

Honestly, sell it. You'll get great money for it, you can get something else that you'll hopefully worry about less, and you'll address some of your concerns re sunroof, etc. Plus you'll free the car up to go to someone else that may enjoy it more.

I personally don't understand why you'll worry less about a car that you're suggesting will be a straight across trade (if you crash the 1M, couldn't you take the money and get a 335is?), but if it's what you'd feel more comfortable with then do it.

Or better yet put your name down for a new M4.

Keep it! The 335 isn't closer to 1M.

I trade my 335 by an 1M for daily use and keep the M5 for weekends....

If you like active steering, that alone probably indicates the 1M isn't a great fit for you.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I had an e90 m3 that wasn't the right car for me.

I have driven a 335is 6mt and really liked it. It sounds fantastic, and has a great interior. The ride comfort is also an excellent balance for the street.

It's not nearly as sharp as the 1M, which is why I like the 1M more. But, it's a great car in its own right.

I will say there is no way I'd buy that car new when used ones are available for around 40k.

Plus the new 4 series is about to come out, so avoid some depreciation by buying used

I disagree- the steering in the 1M is MUCH lighter than the 335 (sans AS). I had a 335 loaner and the steering was brutal at parking lot speeds. The 1M is perfect - the 335is with AS is probably a bit overboosted but less of a drastic change when going from my X6 to the 335 (I don't really notice when switching from the X6 to the 1M)

I agree - that the 335is depreciates badly and I should consider a used one...

All - note I have an X6 as a daily driver. Make no mistake, it is an incredible truck, but it is a truck and not a car. Best darn driving truck out there, but still a truck.

Honestly, I probably have withdrawal - have not driven the 1M in 3 months and February is just depressing here in Chicago.

And yes, I can't explain how trading a $60K car for $60K car makes it OK to drive in bad weather. Like I said, I'm a ninny

Driving the 1M can have severe consequences: 1M intoxication. No rehab available. Only a few derivative substitutes to sooth the 'missed fun' pain to some extent.

lol. You can just have a " garage day" and invite some other 1M buddies over. A few beers and a sawzall and I'm sure you'll be able to get a " moonroof " in that baby in no time.

Aha! I'm glad I made it. I was dying wondering what you drive daily since your 1M only made it out for 1200 miles last year. So You have a street car. A very nice street car. If the 1M was your only car and you were using mass transit then I would say that selling the 1M and maybe doing euro delivery on a new car that you could get more out of would be good. However , it sounds like you have the right car, you appreciate it, you ADORE it, and you can keep it garaged and clean and love it like it should be loved. What you need to do, is sign up for a drivers school, or perhaps a tour, and find more reasons to drive it ... Has if been to road America???

Absolutely agree with Pete. I don't think the 1M is the car for you, not being rude, but based on what you're after, get a 335is, move the 1M to someone who wants it more.
