I believe E90Fleet has the answer to the specifics, i'm just the messenger.

This Beamer was produced between 1960s~1970s. Yes it is a real car and the door is on the front. You can see the hinge on the right and the handle on the left to open in to the cockpit.

What's really nifty is that they did actually produce an //M version. Now THAT is a limited collector's edition car! A friend of mine used to have one, and it was cute as hell.

Are you talking about this car? If so, no M did not produce it, it's only a custom paint job. The Motorsport division was founded in 1972, Isetta's production stopped in 1962 -- long before M's time.

That one looks like the right paintjob, but not the right Isetta. Any BMW historians out there that can shed more light on this? The one I saw definitely looked legit: an M paintjob and interior, badging, etc. I remember reading online that only 15 or so were produced. Either way, they're funny little cars

Drive safe.

For a while it was BMW´s best seller. They only made that and a huge 8cylinder Limousine (the Barockengel) and the 507 roadster. And motorbikes of course.

Yup, they sure have.

Another trivia fact: When people stopped buying the Isetta because they finally could afford a full sized car BMW ran into trouble. They were incredibly close to going bust.
Daimler Benz was just about to buy the whole company (and probably lay it to rest for good) when a german industrialist bought the controlling stake in the company. The famous (but shy of the public) Mr. Quandt.
Then they developed their first mid sized sedan with a sporty touch (see the pattern?), the "neue Klasse" and their rise begann.
The Quandt family still holds a controlling interest (maybe even the majority of the share, I´m not sure) in BMW to this very day. That investment and the stability this major and loyal shareholder provides is the basis for BMW´s success to this very day. Having an investor that is interested in the long term growth of a company instead of short term gains in the stock market makes one hell of a difference. It´s why BMW is run better and performs better than most other auto manufacturers. Similar story with Porsche where the controling majority of the shares belongs to the Porsche/Piech family.

There´s nothing like a good old family business, isn´t there ?

Wow, the Isetta!

Believe it or not, I always wanted one of these cars. I first came to know about them when I saw a toy model inside a hobby store. At the time I wasn't even sure if it was a real.. but then my interest peaked and I started to research it. I remember borrowing books, cutting out pictures and posting them on my wall, and even going into a BMW dealership to ask, lol This was when I was just a kid, yet the salesman was very friendly. He spent a long time (like 45 mins) finding info for me. In the end I came out with many new pics and details about the car that I had never seen before. Plus some interesting facts that he himself knew. I was quite surprised that anyone there cared enough to fill a young kid's curiosity.

That was probably when I decided I was going to one day buy a BMW (oh wait, I still haven't).

But this post has brought my interest in the car back, so who knows my first BMW may just be an old little Isetta!

Thanks for the input, I had no idea that type of drama took place. So in that perspective BMW is family owned, truly astounding story.

I have tried for a long time to get one, even purchased one on ebay and couldnt get it shipped to US. I was in San Francisco about 5 years ago and saw 2 of them parked outside a diner, I went in and talked to the owner of them. It was a couple in the 50's that every Tuesday afternoon they each drove one to the dinner for lunch, I offered him 20,000 cash for one and he wouldnt take it.. They were in perfect condition, which is had to find.

My uncle had one. It was a kid's dream. His was deep green, and we called it the Grasshopper. The front hatch opened up to the side and the steering column had this wierd folding link in it. Top speed was about 58mph. He drove up to Ann Arbor from Pittsburgh to ask my dad's advice about quitting his faculty position at Carnegie Mellon to join some obscure start-up company named Intel. My dad told him no way. Fortunately for my uncle he ignored by dad's advice. My dad also thought his MB 190SL was way cooler than his brother's Isetta. Us kids knew better.
