small High pitch sound...what is it?

last few days I noticed that my car starts to make this somewhat faint yet audible high pitch tone, specially after a few runs above 4k rpm. I muted the radio, and I can hear it but can't pin point where is coming from.

I opened the windows and doesn't seem like its coming from the outside/engine bay of the car. Looks more and more like within the AC/fan system.

anyone heard of this issue or has experienced this?:iono:

You're sure you're not hearing the turbos?

Seriously? I have no problem hearing them with the stereo off. They're not intrusive, quite subtle, but they're there. And, yes, it's the turbos - I can hear them dispose of boost off-throttle.

But, then, I can tell the difference in a half-pound of tire pressure on the track, so maybe I'm overly sensitive.:iono:

If the high-pitched sound goes up and down with speed, it's probably something electrical. But if you hear it and it quits when you suddenly cut the power, you're probably just hearing the turbo whine.

it doesn't go up and down with speed per se, but if I'm at a stop I hear it, but when I engage 1st gear and start to go, it goes lower...once I pick speed, it goes back up.

If you hear it idling at a stop, it probably isn't the turbos - they're pretty much doing nothing at that point. It sounds electrical - do you get it if you kill power to the radio? Do you have iDrive?

I hear all sorts of high pitched sounds from my car. Especially when a CD is in the car, whether or not it is playing. It is NOT the turbos or fuel pump, because it also occurs when the car is off.

There are also bugs within the door gong/seatbelt chimes. Sometimes they just cut out before finishing the sound.

Annoying, but I don't really see how they would fix these things.

Does it happen around 88 MPH? Is your flux capacitor malfunctioning?

Try pressing the re-circlulation button on the HVAC controls and see if it goes away. My car has an issue with the re-circ flap not opening properly sometimes, and it causes a whistling noise at speed when it's pulling in outside air. Turning it back to re-circulation mode gets rid of it instantly. The button also does nothing when the A/C compressor is turned on, so that may be an additional symptom to look for. I'm taking it in to have the dealer look at it in early December, I'll report back once I do.

OK. I have this noise and there was a big discussion on this a while back.

If the noise sounds like its from the Dash (passenger side) then its the water pump. Its a known issue, and it makes noise, like a high pitch hum almost. It will come on when Idle and when driving. You just cant hear it when driving because the engine noise is louder.

The 3 series has the same issue. Its not a problem, just there by design. They didnt do a good job padding it out.

Let me know if thats the sound. It should sound like a high pitch motor sound. If so, its the water pump.

that;s it EXACTLY!

so, from your post and link, sounds like it is the Fuel pump design, and doesn't need replacing. Is this correct? :iono:
