No worries. The big difference between the two is that the V1 has proper BMW amber lighting, while the V2 has idiotic white lighting.

Well I think I may have lucked out on this one. Although it seemed my instrument cluster was faulty due to warning lights randomly coming on, I also started having power issues and after replacing my 7 year old battery, all seems to be good (knock on wood!). Hoping things stay this way

If you are going to go through the trouble of putting in a new gauge cluster, just but an M3 cluster in.

Hi folks - noob to the 1addicts site - though I've had several of my own BMWs (and just took delivery of an M2CS :thump: )
My son bought a 2009 128i. He's at college now so I can't get to the car. He's worried about his engine and I'm walking him through some basic diagnostics. It appears from this old thread there is no oil temp gauge in the 128i? Any current advice on best means of getting to oil temp? I have Bimmercode for my M2, wondering if I can use it when he gets home next weekend and download the SW access for the 128i? Can't believe there is no oil temp available to the driver!!! Monitor it on a daily basis on my '02 E39 540i. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

There are a few ways to get it from the OBD port. That's going to be the easiest and cheapest method.

Yeah, no doubt - thanks. Just wish there was a simple means of monitoring while driving. Cluster-swap and digital wheel seem a bit overkill at this point in the car's tenure.

There are a few devices that plug into OBD that give real time information. One or two of them might require some additional programming to get some specific pieces that are not standard on the readers.
I use ScanGauge II for water temp in my 135i (since I already have oil temp) |

I do not think I saw it last time I used it but Torque is a cheap ($5) app that gets OBD data through a OBD to bluetooth adapter (maybe $20, mine doesn't seem to be working) and can create virtual gauges. If the data is on the OBD port, then you should be able to create a gauge for it and/or record the data. I also have a OBD reader that reads chasis and engine codes so it could probably read the data too, never tried.

Essentially, when you can read oil level, the oil is up to normal temperature. I sometimes will use my Ultra Gauge to get water temp. How far does son have to drive to get to college? Maybe his drive is too short. |

Bimmergeeks Protool app and bluetooth OBD adapter can view oil temp, and really any of the info available to INPA.

For me, I value being able to see oil temps. Helps me know how long to keep my RPM's low and when I can start redlining. I'm also looking for a cheap, easy solution if anyone has one.

Doesn't the instrument cluster plug already carry the oil temperature signal? It just doesn't get used on a 128i cluster. If you installed the 135i cluster, wouldn't it work with minimal coding? That's probably the cheapest and easiest way to get oil temps. You can pick up a 135i cluster for around $100.

I did the 135i cluster in my 128, worth it to me to have the oil temp gauge. It's not just plug and play, you have to take apart the cluster and use an EEPROM programmer to erase the VIN from the donor car so that when you code the cluster it aligns with the recipient car.
You also want to buy a cluster that has less miles than your car, because whichever has higher miles will overwrite the other. (Although you may be able to use the EEPROM programmer to also clear out the donor cluster's mileage). After that you reassemble the cluster and code it to your car. The oil temp output does get assigned correctly to the cluster without doing anything other than aligning the cluster to the recipient car. https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1655093

Slightly off topic but do newer bmws warm up quicker than our 128i? I hate having to drive for miles until the computer fully unleashes the beast of our engine. I think that once we are able to read the oil thru the dash board it still isn't fully optimal yet, I find the performance to be even greater once it warms up past that.
I think if our cars warmed up faster we wouldn't complain about not having an oil temp reader |
