17x7.5 winter OE Wheels

Hey guys,

I am currently searching for some used OE BMW 17x7.5 wheels to run in winter and plan to have 225/45/17 all round (square) setup.

My concern is offset, so many offsets ranging from ET30s to high 40s.

So i got confused, which offsets do i need to look out for?

Some information indicated ET45 and others indicated ET47

Thanks!

There are lots of used 17x7.5 OE wheels for sale locally.

Everything from ET32 offsets to ET47

My local dealer is selling new aftermarket wheels from RC Design with ET43 offset.

That is what's' confusing me, should i stick with anything between ET40 and ET47 offsets? Planning on 225/45 all round.

Garage List
oem front 205/50r17 17x7 et47 would be 148.59mm/5.85” wide
225/45r17 17x7.5 et43 would be 150.88mm/5.94”
225/45r17 17x7.5 et40 would be 147.83mm/5.82”
each measurement wide, in rim .5” 17x7 vs 17x7.5 ” goes towards suspension the other half toward wheel well.
The difference between et40 vs et43 is 3.05mm/.12” closer to suspension
The ideal 17x7 et47 to 17x7.5 et41 so et40 is 1mm less and et43 is 2mm more.

I’ve been reminded of a e82 coupe from a member who runs 17x8.5 et40 sq 225/45r17. That’s a full inch, So I don’t need to calc the difference to know et43 would work. I’d not go over et44 as et45 pushes it but would work.

Here in the states e88 standard rim is 16x7 et44 205/55r16 sq. With options for staggered Sport pkg.

The oem tire from Goodyear had oval shaped sidewalls and the Michelin have square shoulders and straight sidewalls. So even tho the size is bigger I’m certain a square shoulder tire odds of rubing suspension side is actually lower.

Thank you.

I found some X5 E53 17x7.5 wheels for sale ET40 for a really good price.

Is there anything else besides size/width/offset i should look for? Do those wheels fit? they are style 57 if that matters.

Those are perfect, only other concern would be hub/center bore size so may need hub rings. BMW e82 72.56 best I can see e53 is the same

I've thought about running square 17" or 18" using 7.5" wide OE rims with 225 or 235 tires. From this thread it seems with OE rims ET of 47 I'd be rubbing the strut up front. Correct?

I know people running 18x8 235/40 all round ET40s without issues.

Infact that is what i plan to save up for some Ultraleggeras for a square ctrack setup with Cup 2s.

My 17's are for winter, car has some cheap aftermarket proline wheels, which i wish to go OE instead.

OP: For reference, this site does a great job of illustrating what all the changes in width and offset do. Use this when estimating what will fit and what won't.

Also on the tire section of E90Post there is a calculator that will tell you how much your new setup moves toward/away from the strut side and fender side. I'm assuming it does the calcs correctly.

The biggest tire on a 135i e88 was a winter sq set 225/45r18 guy said no rub, rim style 182 18x7.5 et49 front/ rear et52 this compared to front oem 215/40r18 is .2” closer to suspension

I wouldn’t recommend it but that’s a lot more diameter and compared to my oem 205/50r17 17x7 et47. 225/45r18 18x7.5 would be .6” closer to suspension

Ideal et40 for the sq 225/40r18 7.5. et47 I would calculate with links others posted but my calcs .48” closer to suspension
